Monthly Coral maintenance work in December 2021.
05/09/2021
After 3 months we were finally able to get back to do the maintenance work on the coral nursery.
REPORT:
Due to the closure of the national park from 01 May to 01 August, we were unable to conduct the regular monthly maintenance in order to clean the nursery. Survival rates at the nursery were considerably reduced due to the algae growing over and covering the coral fragments.
Furthermore slight anchor damage at one of the transplant sites shows that there are still boats entering the protected area and dropping anchors.
In addition the crown of thorns population at the Bida Islands is quite big and a new survey should be conducted soon to consider what steps to be undertaken to manage this outbreak.

The safest place to be these days seems to be underwater.
Some photos from our monthly cleanup work at the Phi Phi Ley Coral nursery.
Thanks again to all the volunteers involved.

Mabul Marine Ecology Project is using photos of our coral conservation work to promote their own coral restoration works in the Philippines. While normally we would eagerly encourage any use of our materials to help promote conservation worldwide, there is no indication that the photos they are using have been 'borrowed' from the Phi Phi Island Coral Nursery project, and it would be assumed that the photos they are posting appear to be their own work. We did leave a comment regarding the use of our images, but it seems they have removed our comment from their FB page.

Love the Sea, Protect the Reef
Another successful clean up at the coral nursery. The corals on the floating platforms were planted in January 2020 so they are still quite small. But they will grow. The photos of the colonies on the sand are corals that were transplanted from our nurseries from previous years. So it works. All you need is time, money, alot of passionate volunteers and a desire to make a difference.
