ual reef fish, many Blacktip and Whitetip reef sharks,.Leopard sharks are also very common in the marine reserve. The reef life is teeming with trigger fish, unicornfish and many other species of colourful fish. If you are lucky you can spot Manta rays flying around and even sightings of the biggest fish in the world, the mythical Whale Shark are not uncommon here. The coral is also in great shape with a lot of table coral and staghorn coral. Most of the dive sites are filled with huge granite boulders which offer a fantastic playground for divers. The most important of all dive sites in the Similans, which is actually part of Surin National Park, is Richelieu Rock, famous for its incomparable variety and abundance of marine life. การทำประมงเกินขนาด

ทะเลไทยเสื่อมโทรมลงอย่างรวดเร็วไปพร้อมกับปริมาณสัตว์น้ำที่จับเกินศักยภาพการฟื้นตัว ก่อนปีพ.ศ. 2503 ไทยจับสัตว์น้ำได้ปีละ 1.5 แสนตัน เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็วจนถึง 1.5 ล้านตันในปีพ.ศ. 2515

จนกระทั่งเหลือเพียง 3 กิโลกรัมต่อชั่วโมงในปีพ.ศ.2542 ซึ่งปลาที่จับได้เป็นปลาขนาดเล็กและเป็นลูกปลาเศรษฐกิจที่ยังไม่โตเต็มวัยถึงร้อยละ 40

ทั้งนี้ การเร่งตักตวงจับปลาในทะเลที่ทำให้ประเทศไทยก้าวขึ้นติดอันดับหนึ่งใน 10 ของประเทศผู้ผลิตสินค้าจากการประมงของโลกนั้นต้องแลกกับการที่ท้องทะเลของไทยถูกทำลาย จนทรุดโทรมถึงจุดวิกฤตและต้องการการฟื้นฟูอย่างเร่งด่วน!!

การประมงอย่างไร้ความรับผิดชอบนำไปสู่การล่มสลายของอุตสาหกรรมการประมงครั้งใหญ่ ดังเช่นที่อุตสาหกรรมปลาค็อดของบริษัทนิวฟาวนด์แลนด์ ประเทศแคนนาดา ล่มสลายลงไปในปีพ.ศ. 2553 ทำให้คนต้องตกงานมากถึง 40,000 คน
