One of the types of chemical reactions that exists is called decomposition, where a larger molecule breaks down into two or more molecules. This process happens naturally in hydrogen peroxide (also known as bleach), but at a much slower rate. In order for the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to occur, a catalyst must be added, in this case, manganese dioxide. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen, which you can see coming out of the beaker.

Pretty cool effect!

Do not try this at home! Pure oxygen is highly flammable and it is toxic at very high concentrations!
