(Refraction)**
(Waldorf Science)**

# # 🌟 Grade 8 Physics Main Lesson Block: "Light" (June 22–26, 2026)
This week, our Grade 8 students kicked off their one-month intensive Physics block! Building upon what they learned in previous years, this block covers four core topics: **Light, Sound, Heat, and Fluid Mechanics**.
For our first week, we dived straight into the world of **"Light."** ✨
💡 **"Can we actually see light?"**
This thought-provoking question re-opened our exploration. The students recalled that light is only visible when it interacts with a surface. Building on this, we conducted experiments with different surfaces—black, white, and mirrors—to observe how materials absorb and reflect light (Reflection).
📸 **From Camera Obscura to Pin-Hole Cameras**
Students transformed a darkened room into a Camera Obscura and even crafted their own mini **Pin-hole Cameras**. This hands-on activity allowed them to observe firsthand that light travels in straight lines.
💧 **Refraction and Light as a Wave**
We explored how light travels through different media, such as water and oil. To understand Refraction, we observed water waves spreading in a tray. This helped students visualize light as waves of varying wavelengths, helping them understand that the colors we see depend on how different surfaces absorb light.
🔍 **Exploring Convex and Concave Lenses**
We wrapped up the week by observing images through convex and concave lenses at various distances (from infinity to close-range), observing inverted images of different sizes. This hands-on experience prepares them for calculating focal length, image distance, and object distance next week.
🌿 **The Waldorf Approach to Science**
> "We do not let preconceived ideas or expectations cloud our observation."
>
In Waldorf science, we prioritize **Direct Experience**. Students are given time to fully immerse themselves, reflect on their observations through drawings, record their procedures, and arrive at their own conclusions.
Instead of starting with hypotheses, we guide students to engage deeply with what is right in front of them, placing **Observation** at the heart of science. While learning to observe subtle phenomena requires patience, it empowers students to develop a profound, meaningful understanding—moving far beyond rote memorization. ❤️
