งานของนักสังคมสงเคราะห์มีความสำคัญต่อเด็กและครอบครัวในหลายแง่มุม ทั้งการช่วยเหลือและดูแลเด็กและเยาวชนที่ที่กำลังเผชิญปัญหาสุขภาพจิต ปกป้องเด็กที่เสี่ยงต่อการถูกใช้ความรุนแรง ช่วยสนับสนุนเด็กที่อยู่ในสถานการณ์ที่ครอบครัวมีปัญหาไม่เข้าใจกัน จนอาจทำให้เด็ก ๆ เหล่านั้นตกอยู่ในความเสี่ยงที่มากขึ้น
เรื่องราวของคุณแม่อารี และน้องพร ลูกบุญธรรม ที่ ข่าว3มิติ ได้ไปสัมภาษณ์เป็นหนึ่งในตัวอย่างที่ทำให้เราได้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของนักสังคมสงเคราะห์ เมื่อพรโตขึ้นก็เริ่มมีปัญหาเรื่องการคุยกันไม่เข้าใจกับคุณแม่ จนถึงขั้นย้ายออกจากบ้านไป
ในเวลานั้นเองพี่วา นักสังคมสงเคราะห์จากกรมกิจการเด็กและเยาวชน ได้เข้ามาให้ความช่วยเหลือ พี่วารับฟังปัญหา ช่วยหาทางออก และติดตามอย่างต่อเนื่องเพื่อให้มั่นใจว่าครอบครัวนี้จะกลับมาอยู่ด้วยกันอย่างมีความสุขอีกครั้ง และในที่สุดก็สามารถเชื่อมความสัมพันธ์ของแม่ลูกให้กลับมาแน่นแฟ้นกว่าเดิม พรเล่าว่า หากไม่ได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากนักสังคมสงเคราะห์ เธอนึกไม่ออกเลยว่าชีวิตหรือความสัมพันธ์ของเธอกับแม่จะเป็นอย่างไร
แต่ไม่ใช่เด็กทุกคนที่จะโชคดีแบบนี้ ประเทศไทยมีนักสังคมสงเคราะห์เพียง 5 คนต่อประชากร 100,000 คน ในขณะที่สหรัฐอเมริกาที่มีถึง 200 คน จำนวนนักสังคมสงเคราะห์ทั้งประเทศไทยมีเพียง 3,351 คน ซึ่งจำนวนที่เหมาะสมอยู่ที่ 7,000 คน การมีนักสังคมสงเคราะห์ไม่เพียงพอ ทำให้นักสังคมสงเคราะห์ต้องทำงานเกินกำลัง ส่งผลให้เด็กที่เผชิญความรุนแรงมีเพียง 1 ใน 4 เท่านั้นที่ได้รับความช่วยเหลืออย่างครอบคลุมทุกขั้นตอน
หากไม่มีการลงทุนเพิ่ม ความเสียหายที่สังคมไทยต้องจ่ายจะเพิ่มขึ้นมหาศาล ทั้งด้านเศรษฐกิจ และการสูญเสียโอกาสที่จะโตไปเป็นพลเมืองที่มีคุณภาพของเด็ก ๆ

Social workers do extraordinary work with families across Thailand every day, helping to support vulnerable children and young people, including those struggling with mental health, at risk of violence, encountering difficult family situations which leave them at risk, and much more.
We can witness the impact of social work through the story of Ms. Aree and her adopted daughter, Ms. P**n, which is featured in 3Miti News. As Ms. P**n grew older, she experienced increasing communication problems and discorded with her mother, and even left home at one point.
That was when Ms. Wa, a social worker from the Department of Children and Youth, stepped in. Ms. Wa listened to their problems and helped them find a middle ground, continuously following up to ensure the well-being of the whole family. As a result, mother and daughter now have a much stronger relationship. Ms. P**n says that without the social worker's help, she couldn't imagine what her future, or her relationship with her mother, would be like.
But not every child is as fortunate. Thailand has only 5 social workers per 100,000 people, compared to 200 in the U.S.. With just 3,351 professionals nationwide — far short of the 7,000 needed — many practitioners are overwhelmed and only 1 in 4 children in violent situations receive full support. Without stronger investment, the cost to Thai society is enormous — both in GDP and in children’s lost potential.
