On 3-5, December 2024 — Representative from Asian Institute of Technology Belt and Road Research Center，Ms. Mutita Wattanasuk, research associate of AIT BRRC, participated in the 14th International Symposium on Southeast Asian Water Environment (SEAWE-14). The event was organized by the Research Center for Water Environment Technology (RECWET) at the University of Tokyo (UTokyo, Japan), in collaboration with the Sustainable Process Engineering Center (SPEC) at Universiti Malaya (UM, Malaysia), and held at the Wyndham Grand Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
During the symposium, Ms. Mutita delivered a presentation titled "Elimination of Microplastics in Urban Decentralized Wastewater Treatment: A Case Study in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, Thailand." The study, conducted under the guidance of Dr. Wenchao Xue, Director of BRRC and Associate Professor at AIT, focused on the potential of decentralized wastewater treatment systems to address microplastic pollution. These systems are gaining popularity in developing countries as cost-effective alternatives to traditional centralized treatment plants. The research aimed to assess their ability to remove microplastics, which have become a significant environmental concern in urban areas. The findings are expected to inform future decisions on wastewater treatment infrastructure and encourage the broader adoption of decentralized systems as sustainable alternatives to conventional facilities.
The presentation and the participation of BRRC contributed significantly to the symposium's discussions on improving water quality and sustainability in urban areas across Southeast Asia. SEAWE-14 brought together leading researchers, environmental experts, and policymakers to address critical water-related challenges in the region.
Through active participation in international research, BRRC, under the leadership of AIT, continues to expand its influence in the field, strengthening regional collaboration and advancing sustainable solutions for water management.

On October 25th, 2024 – The AIT Belt and Road Research Center (BRRC) hosted the inaugural China-Thai Collaboration in Environmental Protection Seminar under the theme: “United Strategies for Black-Odorous Urban Rivers: Insights and Innovations from China and Thailand Perspectives,” at the Milton Bender Auditorium, AIT. The seminar aimed to address urban black-odorous river pollution, strengthen bilateral ties, and promote sustainable water pollution control practices across the region. Co-organizers included Tongji University, China Harbour Engineering Co., Ltd. (CHEC), and Supumps Environmental Technology (Changzhou) Co. Ltd.

Opening remarks by Prof. Pai-chi Li, AIT President, and Prof. Li Fengting, Deputy Dean at Tongji University, laid the groundwork for discussions on urban water quality challenges. Dr. Nuttakan Wongfun of Thailand’s Pollution Control Department (PCD) shared Thailand’s strategies to combat water pollution, including enforcement of the Water Resources Act, expanding wastewater treatment, and leveraging Big Data. Dr. Gao Qiusheng from China’s Research Academy of Environmental Sciences highlighted China’s multi-faceted approach involving pollution source control, sediment dredging, and ecological restoration, with projects like Yueya Lake and Meishe River significantly improving water quality. Dr. Pathan Bunjongpru of Bangkok’s Metropolitan Administration discussed Bangkok’s water management, noting only 13% wastewater treatment coverage with plans to reach 96% by 2040 through public-private partnerships and community engagement......
The seminar is the first seminar of the China-Thai Collaboration in Environmental Protection Series on the China-Thailand Environmental Technology and Industry Cooperation Platform that has been launched on October 24th, 2024, in BIETC, Bangkok. The Seminar Series, aiming to create a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration between experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from both countries, will showcase successful environmental technologies, foster collaborative strategies for addressing various environmental problems of public concern, and enhance the technical capabilities of environmental professionals in Thailand and China. This one on United Strategies for Black-Odorous Urban Rivers concluded with a commitment to further activities under the China-Thailand Environment Technology and Industrial Cooperation Platform, marking a strong step toward regional environmental collaboration.

On October 24th, 2024 – The AIT Belt and Road Research Center (BRRC) collaborated with Tongji University, China, and the E20 Environmental Platform to co-organize “The China-Thailand Environmental Cooperation Forum and Launching Ceremony of the China-Thailand Environmental Technology and Industry Cooperation Platform” at BITEC, Bangna, Bangkok, Thailand. This forum aimed to strengthen connections and explore collaborative opportunities between China and Thailand in environmental protection, bringing together representatives from governmental, academic, and industrial sectors.

Dr. Suwit Khunkitti, Vice Chairman of the AIT Board of Trustees and Former Deputy Prime Minister and Former Minister of Education of Thailand, delivered a welcome address, setting the stage for impactful discussions. Opening remarks were given by Mr. Wang Qiang, First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, and Mr. Yang Chunlin, Second-Level Inspector of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, China. They highlighted the Chinese government’s environmental achievements and ambitions, along with Shanghai’s industrial efforts toward green and sustainable development.......
Dr. Monthip Sriratana and Prof. Li Fengting, served as representatives from Asian Institute of Technology and Tongji University, formally launched the China-Thailand Environmental Technology and Industry Cooperation Platform. Prof. Zong Bingnian outlined the platform’s action plan, noting that it aims to harness China’s expertise to address Thailand’s pollution challenges, elevate local environmental technology, and foster industrial partnerships. Key objectives include advancing Thailand’s environmental technology capabilities, positioning the nation as an ASEAN hub, and supporting these efforts through research, technology demonstrations, and green finance. Implementation will involve joint projects, talent development, and industrial park initiatives to promote sustainable ecological solutions throughout Southeast Asia.

On October 24, 2024 – Asian Institute of Technology co-organized the “Green Tech Expo 2024” that unfolded over three days from October 24 to 26, at Hall 102 of the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Center (BITEC). The event, themed “Driving Sustainable Solutions: Green Technology for Business,” brought together leaders, researchers, and industry experts from across the globe, focusing on accelerating sustainable development initiatives and promoting advanced green technologies that enhance business sustainability and efficiency.

The AIT Belt and Road Research Center (BRRC) played a pivotal role in co-organizing the Green Tech Expo 2024. In a collaborative effort with the Thailand-Sino Association of Sciences and Technology (TSAST), China Council for the Promotion of International Trade–Shanghai (CCPIT-Shanghai), Burapha University, China Chamber of International Commerce, and the Guangzhou Industry High-Quality Development Association, this event aimed to create a diverse platform for dialogue, technological exchange, and the cultivation of partnerships that drive forward sustainable development objectives across Asia and beyond.

Apart from AIT Booth, this year there is a cluster of green tech companies organized by Asian Institute of Technology, participated the Expo as exhibitors, including INC SQUARE Co., Ltd., Drone Entry (Thailand) Co., Ltd., Supumps Environmental Technology (Changzhou) Co. Ltd., Anhui Pushi Ecological Environment Engineering Co. Ltd., Lihe Technology (Hunan) Co. On 24th, October 2024 – AIT BRRC is organizing “The China-Thailand Environmental Cooperation Forum and The Launching Ceremony of the China-Thailand Environmental Technology and Industry Cooperation Platform” in BITEC, Bangna, Bangkok, Thailand. Other co-organizers include Tongji University from China, and E20 Environmental Platform. This China-Thailand Environmental Cooperation Forum is one important session of The Green Tech Expo 2024 (www.greentechnologyexpo.co ) , which is from 24th to 26th in EH102. AIT has been co-organizing the Green Tech Expo for two years. AIT Booth is TH54 this year.

The China-Thailand Environmental Cooperation Forum and Cooperation Platform Launching events will be a highlight for environmental protection collaboration between Thailand and China, among government, industry and the academia, for technology advancement and sustainable economic development. The Green Tech Expo 2024 will also feature presentations on green technology from leading companies and agencies from Thailand, China, and various other countries.
