𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗮 of FCEE and Co-Director of the Global Water and Sanitation Center (GWSC) at AIT represented AIT at a briefing on "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗞𝗼𝘀𝗵𝗶 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱: 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱," organized by the Embassy of Nepal in Bangkok in collaboration with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC).

Drawing on his expertise in water and disaster risk management, Prof. Sangam highlighted the Bhote Koshi disaster as an important lesson for strengthening disaster preparedness not only in Nepal but across the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region, emphasizing that events of this nature should be viewed as cascading multi-hazard events rather than isolated floods.

Prof. Sangam identified three priorities for strengthening preparedness across the region: improving the understanding and communication of cascading multi-hazard events; establishing a regional multi-hazard risk assessment programme for the HKH; and developing integrated regional and local multi-hazard early warning systems.

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the World Toilet Organization (WTO) have announced that the World Toilet Summit 2026 will be held from 17–19 November 2026 at the AIT campus in Pathum Thani, Thailand, concluding on 19 November - United Nations World Toilet Day.

The summit will bring together government leaders, city authorities, researchers, innovators, manufacturers, financiers, and sanitation experts to advance practical solutions for safe, sustainable, and climate-resilient sanitation.

Under the theme “Safe Toilets, Reused Resources, and Healthy Communities,” discussions will focus on:
🚽 Climate-resilient sanitation for cities and communities
♻️ Circular sanitation and resource recovery
🤝 Turning dialogue into implementation through markets and partnerships

The summit is co-organised by AIT Global Water & Sanitation Center (GWSC) and the World Toilet Organization, with Thailand’s Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration as host partners.

A pre-summit programme on 16 November will also feature the Urgent Run, campus site visits, and a student hackathon, while the WTO Hall of Fame Awards will take place on 18 November.

The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FCEE), AIT, is proud to be part of a landmark milestone in regional scientific cooperation. On 16 August 2026, AIT, together with the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysia, officially launched the Joint Research Center for Sustainable Development of China–ASEAN Countries (CARS) in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.

FCEE was represented at the launch by Dean Dr. Ekbordin Winijkul, Prof. Thammarat Koottatep, and Dr. Wenchao Xue, alongside AIT President Prof. Pai-Chi Li.

As a founding and co-leading institution, AIT will also host the CARS Secretariat, serving as a coordination hub for joint activities among partners across China and ASEAN countries.

Dean Dr. Ekbordin also delivered an invited presentation at the accompanying academic forum under the theme of One Health, addressing environmental biological pollution, digital innovation, and green water treatment technologies.

CARS marks a significant step toward more structured scientific cooperation between China and ASEAN in environmental protection and sustainable development. 🌿

𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧

On August 6 and 7, the MicroSOS team visited rice fields in Don Raet district, Surin Province, one of Thailand's key rice growing regions, to study soil and plant microbiomes in a working agricultural landscape. The trip included a stop in Ayutthaya on August 5 along the way.

Rice paddies offer a valuable window into the relationship between soil microbiomes, nutrient cycling, and crop resilience, the same dynamics at the heart of the MicroSOS project.

The visit added a practical, field based dimension to the MicroSOS team's broader work, connecting soil science back to the people and landscapes it aims to support.

The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FCEE), AIT is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Wenchao Xue from Associate Professor to Full Professor, following the approval of the AIT Board of Trustees at its meeting held on 20 August 2026.

Prof. Wenchao joined AIT in 2018 and is part of the Environmental Engineering and Management (EEM) academic program. Her research focuses on environmental membrane and electrochemical technologies, sustainable wastewater treatment, watershed management, microplastic pollution, and emerging contaminants.

A UNESCO–TWAS Young Affiliate for East and Southeast Asia, Prof. Wenchao also serves as the Founding Director of the AIT Belt and Road Research Center and Chair of the EEM Academic Program.

From August 14 to 16, the MicroSOS team, led by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘇, Associate Professor of the Environmental Engineering and Management (EEM) Program, took students on a field excursion to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, just south of Hua Hin. Established as Thailand's first marine national park, the site offers a rare mix of coastal ecosystems, from limestone hills and mangroves to Thailand's largest freshwater marsh, making it a fitting outdoor classroom for a project centered on plant microbiomes, soil health, and climate resilience.

The excursion gave students the chance to move beyond the classroom and connect their coursework to real ecosystems shaped by the same climate pressures the 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗦𝗢𝗦 project studies, from coastal soils to plant and microbial adaptation under changing conditions.

On August 13ᵗʰ, the MicroSOS Mini Symposium, led by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘇, Associate Professor of the Environmental Engineering and Management (EEM) Program, brought the workshop to a close at the Milton E. Bender Jr. Auditorium, opening its doors to the wider research community for a day of talks on plant microbiomes and climate resilience.

Agriculture and agricultural soils are under increasing stress due to climate change. Microbiomes in the soil can greatly contribute to plant adaptation under stressful conditions by facilitating nutrient acquisition, triggering immunity against pathogens and insects, and building resilience to abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity. Understanding microbiome functions and their application in agriculture is pivotal for addressing climate change challenges.

Speakers explored microbiology's role in climate change mitigation and adaptation, the secrets of plant microbiomes, and nature-guided approaches to bioinoculant discovery. Short talks from researchers covered a wide range of topics, from disease suppressiveness and yeast-Fusarium interactions in the phyllosphere, to drought stress alleviation, microbial volatile compounds, the avocado microbiome, and turning waste into bioplastics.

The symposium reflected MicroSOS's broader mission, part of the EU Horizon Europe programme, to connect academic and non-academic partners across agriculture and the environment, exchanging skills, data, and experience to build innovative, climate-resilient solutions for the future of farming.
