Wonder Valley International School

A five-year-old boy took a fall while playing recently.

In an instant, his friends responded.

They supported him over to get a cold compress and held it in place for him.

His four-year-old pal brought out a book for him to read while he recovered, then sat by his side reading another book to keep him company.

A three-year-old watching nearby offered to carry the belongings that had been left behind.

"He would not have to carry heavy things," she said.

What touched us was not simply that the children wanted to help, but how thoughtfully they did so. Each child noticed a different need and found their own way to respond.

Empathy is the ability to notice little things, to care, and to take action without being asked because we feel connected with one another.

When lived, such lessons gradually become part of who we are. 🤎

One of the children in our kindergarten will soon be moving back home to China, and the other children wanted to make farewell cards for their friend.

When it was suggested that they could have help writing in Chinese, every child gave the same response:

"I want to write it myself."

It didn't matter that the characters were unfamiliar or difficult. What mattered was that the message came from them.

So they carefully practiced three simple phrases: 我爱你 (I love you), 平安 (Stay safe), and 开心 (Be happy), taking their time to write each stroke with care and sincerity.

No one needed to be encouraged to practice.

When there is a genuine desire to connect, language naturally becomes a tool for expression.

In this case, it became a way to express love, friendship, and good wishes for someone they care about.

And when learning grows out of a real human need, even a third language is never something that has to be forced upon children. 🌱

This year's story is about Mae Phosop, the Rice Mother, a life-giving figure in Thai culture who is said to watch over the rice harvest.

For our Year 1 and 2 children, it is more than a story to perform. They have planted, cared for, and harvested rice themselves, and are now designing and creating the props and scenery for the production.

Little by little, the story is coming to life through their own hands and experiences. 🤎🌾

Painting is never only about painting.

As children work with watercolors, they prepare their materials, care for their brushes, experiment with color, and look after their artwork from beginning to end.

Along the way, they are developing coordination, concentration, independence, and responsibility. Just as importantly, we catch small glimpses of who they are through the unique ways they approach their work.

Because in early childhood, what matters is not only the finished picture, but also the growth that happens along the way. 💙

🌧️🌧️🌧️There is a quiet beauty in being fully present with what is…

And finally, after four months of caring for our rice field, the big question remained:

How much rice did we actually grow? 🌾

To find out, the children estimated, measured, weighed, recorded data, and added up their results together. What began as a simple question soon became a meaningful opportunity to use mathematics in a real and purposeful way.

In the end, our quarter-rai rice field produced just one sack of rice! Still in its raw form before dehusking.

More than a harvest, this gives us something equally valuable: a baseline. Now we know where we are. Next year, the children can reflect on what worked, what didn't, and how we might improve our yield together.

We look forward to seeing what next season brings. 🌾

As part of their inquiry into ancient civilizations, Band 1 students explored this question by designing and building their own miniature communities.

Through observing, creating and discussing their ideas together, the children began to think more deeply about how people live, work, and care for one another.
