Thailand’s government announced plans to hold a referendum on whether to revoke two agreements with Cambodia regarding border demarcation.
The move comes after simmering disputes and clashes along the 817-km border.
The agreements, signed in 2000 and 2001, set up a framework for joint surveys and boundary marking. Critics argue that cancelling them without alternatives could create a vacuum and more tensions.
Prime Minister Anutin said the referendum would give the government a clear mandate from the people before making decisions that affect sovereignty. Cambodia has not yet given an official response.
