Amazon Japan to sell fresh produce online
May 31, 2019 Inside Retail Asia
Amazon Japan is partnering with local supermarket operator Life Corp to sell fresh foods online.
The project will commence in parts of Tokyo later this year and provide a range of produce to Amazon’s Prime Now subscribers in Japan, offering order times as prompt as two hours for delivery. It is the first time the internet giant’s Japanese unit has partnered with a supermarket chain.
Amazon Japan will handle all deliveries and process payments under the new venture, which targets those who face challenges leaving home to go shopping, such as the elderly or busy working professionals. The firm is hoping to use the service to meet a broader demographic for its Prime Now subscriptions.
The arrangement is an opportunity for Life to extend its current online reach, which currently covers just over half of the Tokyo metropolitan zone. Profitability remains a limiting factor for supermarkets investing in online order infrastructure in Japan

DHL Launches Same-Day Delivery for E-commerce Merchants
DHL eCommerce launched a same-day and next-day delivery service for online retailers that is targeted to compete with Amazon, FedEx Corp., UPS Inc., and the U.S. Postal Service.
The Parcel Metro service is a network of local and regional delivery vendors and crowd-sourced drivers and vehicles designed to ensure flexibility and capacity in last-mile deliveries, according to DHL. It has begun operating in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, and DHL plans to expand the service to Atlanta and Dallas in the second quarter, San Francisco in the third, and Washington, D.C., later this year.
DHL’s software platform allows it to find the best drivers for each route. Customers can choose from several delivery time windows, including two-hour, same day and next day, as well as their preferred delivery address. Consumers can use a mobile device to track shipments in real-time, send instructions to their courier, reschedule a delivery and rate the experience. Retailers can customize the mobile interface with their own branding.
“DHL Parcel Metro is part of a number of innovations we are actively implementing, including augmented reality glasses for greater pick accuracy, ‘follow me’ robots and autonomous vehicles,” said Charles Brewer, CEO, DHL eCommerce.
E-commerce sales grew 16% in 2017 while total retail sales grew 4.4%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

FedEx Corp. anticipates a growth in online transactions in China as the company opens its new hub in the country. Air cargo volume in China has grown steadily together with the demand of cross-border eCommerce market.

China’s air cargo volume is projected to increase to at least 6.2 percent in 2018, which is now considered as the biggest gain in the past 7 years, according to China’s Civil Aviation Administration.
“There’s an opportunity to bring a lot of products and a lot of convenience to the Chinese consumers… With the wealth of Chinese consumers and the worldliness of Chinese consumers, they’re going to demand goods from the U.S. and Europe and parts all over the world,” David Cunningham Jr. Chief Executive Officer of FedEx Express
China’s growing demand for cross-border eCommerce

Logistics providers keen on locker network
By Retail Asia on 16/11/2017
At least four logistics providers, including the biggest player, Singapore Post, could be involved in the open network of parcel lockers that the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) called for yesterday in its plan to make deliveries more efficient.
The pilot will go live in the second half of next year, involving some 75 lockers in public housing estates and train stations in Punggol and Bukit Panjang.
IMDA will call for proposals for the six-to 12-month pilot from companies by the year end.
The eventual system will allow logistics providers to operate this integrated network, which is expected to have some 760 lockers covering the whole island eventually. But the different operators have to provide a consistent user interface, much like how the Wireless@SG national Wi-Fi network works.
SingPost, which operates the largest network of parcel lockers called POPStation at 153 locations, said it is keen to work with more players. It has since July last year been renting out locker space to those who want to use it to facilitate buying and selling on online marketplaces.
“We would like to work with the Government to expand parcel locker use in Singapore,” said Mr Freddy Chang, head of SP Parcels, a subsidiary of SingPost. “Parcel lockers are an important solution to improving efficiency at the last mile of delivery.
Local logistics start-up blu said the IMDA scheme is timely, given the increase in online shopping and urban congestion. It currently operates 49 bluPort lockers islandwide, mostly at petrol kiosks, malls and Cheers convenience stores.
“Collaborating with IMDA allows us to explain and promote the benefits of a parcel locker network to both retailers and logistics sector stakeholders,” said Mr Cliff Lim, business development head at blu, which works with DHL and FedEx.
Another local start-up, Go Plus, which has developed a parcel locker with biometric verification capabilities, and Ninja Van, which operates a handful of Ninja Boxes here, said they will consider taking part in the IMDA’s parcel locker network.
For consumers and online shoppers, a nationwide network of lockers is a welcome development. Pre-school teacher Jasmine Kaur, 33, uses POPStation but there is none within walking distance of her home in Ang Mo Kio. “It would be great if consumers have more pickup points to choose from,” she said.

Wal-Mart Applies for Patent for Blimp-Style Floating Warehouse
By Matthew Boyle
Cowen & Co.'s Chen Says Wal-Mart Is 'Well-Positioned'
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has opened a new front in its battle with Amazon.com Inc.
The world’s largest retailer has applied for a U.S. patent for a floating warehouse that could make deliveries via drones, which would bring products from the aircraft down to shoppers’ homes.

The blimp-style machine would fly at heights between 500 feet and 1,000 feet (as much as 305 meters), contain multiple launching bays, and be operated autonomously or by a remote human pilot. Amazon was granted a patent for a similar vessel in April 2016.
The migration to the skies represents the latest volley in a clash between Wal-Mart and Amazon to grab shoppers’ attention, loyalty and dollars. In the process, the companies are increasingly treading on the other’s turf: Amazon is opening physical stores and agreed to pay $13.7 billion for upscale grocer Whole Foods Market Inc. Wal-Mart, meanwhile, has beefed up its e-commerce business through acquisitions and offers like free two-day shipping.
An unmanned airborne warehouse -- laden with drones -- could help retailers lower the costs of fulfilling online orders, particularly the so-called “last mile” to a customer’s house, which is usually handled by a local or national logistics company. To avoid that expense, Wal-Mart and other retailers often encourage shoppers to pick up those orders at the store, where they might grab a few additional items. Earlier this week, Target Corp. agreed to acquire a software company that coordinates local deliveries.
“The core challenge of traffic and driving distance in any major city or in a very rural location can be helped by a floating warehouse,” said Brandon Fletcher, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein. “Movable warehouses are a really nice idea because any flexible part of a logistics system allows it to be more efficient when demand varies wildly. The e-commerce world suffers from highly variable demand and more creative solutions are needed.”
Town to TownA movable warehouse could serve a wider distribution area, Fletcher said, compared with a traditional warehouse that can only fill orders within a fixed driving distance. The airship could fly to one town and release a flock of drones to deliver packages, after which the drones would return to the vessel and restock while it flew to the next town. Such a system would be more efficient than having the drones fly back to a central distribution hub, according to research firm CB Insights.
“There are numerous ways to distribute and deliver products,” according to Wal-Mart’s patent application. “Getting the product to a delivery location, however, can cause undesirable delays, can add cost and reduce revenue.”
Wal-Mart’s application stands a good chance of getting approved as it goes into more detail about the implementation of a gas-filled aircraft than Amazon’s patent, which is a more general description of the concept of airborne-delivery systems, according to Khaled Fekih-Romdhane, managing partner at patent-licensing firm Longhorn IP.
This isn’t the first time Wal-Mart has shadowed Amazon’s intellectual property. In October, it filed a patent application for a web-based system similar to Amazon’s Dash buttons, which can quickly reorder household goods like paper towels or razor blades. The technology could also gather shopper data, such as how often a product is used and at what times of day.
In recent years, Wal-Mart has significantly stepped up its patent filings, many of which focus on web development and easing shoppers’ journey through the store. The company has also filed a patent for in-store drones that would ferry products from the backroom to the sales floor.

Hong Kong retail landlords ‘ready to negotiate’
By Retail Asia on 25/08/2017
Hong Kong retail landlords are expected to be more flexible with lease terms as the market continues to recover, says real-estate consultancy Knight Frank.
With four consecutive months of positive growth, retail sales value rose another 0.1 per cent year on year in June.
Visitor arrivals during the first half of the year were up 2.4 per cent, led by 2.3 per cent growth in visitors from the Chinese mainland.
“Rental levels for prime street retail stores in different districts have mostly undergone adjustments,” says Knight Frank.
“Recognising that extra capital cost is needed to recruit new tenants and at the same time to avoid the risk of having empty shops for an extended period, landlords are now willing to make more adjustments during negotiations.
“Following the stabilisation in overall retail sales, we expect to see more realignments for retail stores in the comings days.”
The company believes the retail rental market is on track to bottom out before the end of the year.
