On 22 August 2026, Asst. Prof. Dr. Romyen Kosaikanont and Prof. Dr. Sujitra Wongkasemjit, Vice Presidents of Mae Fah Luang University (MFU), alongside executive administrators and faculty members, welcomed a delegation from the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. Led by Mr. Chavaphon Wattanavekin, First Vice-Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, the committee visited Chiang Rai from 20 to 22 August 2026 to examine strategies for balancing Thailand-China trade and resolving border trade challenges.

Organised by the Subcommittee on Monitoring Global Situations Affecting Thailand and ASEAN, the visit included an MFU briefing across five key areas:
• The university’s role in cross-border cooperation within the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS)
• Establishing Chiang Rai as a knowledge hub for Chinese language, culture, and economics while preparing skilled professionals for trade, investment, and tourism
• Closing knowledge and skills gaps for Thai entrepreneurs in language, business regulations, product standards, consumer behavior, and digital marketing
• Addressing supply chain and border logistics constraints, including the R3A route, transit through Laos to China, and Mekong River shipping
• Policy recommendations to transform Chiang Rai into a regional center for knowledge and workforce development, rather than a mere transit route

Located in Chiang Rai, a crucial link within the Greater Mekong Subregion, MFU leverages its specialised academic units, including the School of Sinology, the School of Law (with its Business Law and Chinese Communication Programme), and the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Programme. These units have been working closely with local public and private sector partners to develop research, prepare career-ready graduates, and provide academic support to businesses trading with China. Covering communications, business, and related laws, these efforts aim to position Chiang Rai as a long-term hub for Thailand-China cooperation.

From 18 to 20 August 2026, Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) transformed into a hub of innovation as it hosted the “Regional National Science Week 2026.” Spearheaded by the Scientific and Technological Instruments Center (STIC) in collaboration with science-related schools, internal divisions, and network partners, the three-day event was held under the inspiring theme "Intelligence Science for a Sustainable Future".

The event commenced at the C1 Lecture Building with a floral tribute before the royal portrait of King Mongkut, the Father of Thai Science, honouring His Majesty's foundational role in advancing Thai science. Asst. Prof. Dr. Natthawut Yodsuwan, Vice President of MFU, presided over the ceremony, joined by university executives, staff, students, and delegations from schools in Chiang Rai and the upper northern region.

During the official opening ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siam Popluechai, Director of STIC, outlined the event's core objectives. Co-hosted with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, the event aimed to immerse students, educators, and the public in hands-on learning across science, technology, and health sciences. By showcasing the university's latest advancements, the initiative sought to inspire future studies and demonstrate how science can be leveraged to serve society, promote well-being, and build a sustainable world.

In his opening remarks, Asst. Prof. Dr. Natthawut Yodsuwan emphasised the transformative power of the event. He noted that the exhibitions and activities were designed not only to sharpen technical skills but to instill a scientific mindset—one that drives creative innovation, enhances quality of life, and delivers lasting benefits to society.

The vibrant three-day event featured a diverse array of engaging activities, categorised into competitive challenges and immersive exhibitions, such as Cosmetic Science and Beauty Quiz Competition, Food Science and Technology Quiz Competition, Speech Contest under the theme “Intelligence Science for a Sustainable Future,” Future Smart Packaging Challenge Design, and Healthy Northern Local Food Tray (Khantoke) Contest.

Ultimately, Regional National Science Week 2026 reflects MFU’s dedication to cultivating the next generation of scientific leaders. As an institution in the Greater Mekong Subregion, MFU remains steadfast in its mission to serve as an educational hub—developing human capital, translating research into real-world solutions, and promoting environmental conservation to ensure a sustainable future for the region.

MFU Highlights "Flood-Eye" System on ThaiPBS, Expanding Proactive Flood Monitoring from Chiang Rai to Nan

The Center for Academic Service (CAS) at Mae Fah Luang University reinforces its commitment to leveraging technology and research innovations for area-based disaster management.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Nattaphon Rangsaritvorakarn, Assistant Director of the the Center for Academic Services and Head of the Integrated Disaster Logistics Management Research Center (DisLog), was recently featured on ThaiPBS’s People’s Station to present “Jai Nam” (Flood-Eye: Flood Monitoring System)—an innovative platform enhancing real-time decision-making during flood events.

Flood-Eye solves the challenge of fragmented data by aggregating rainfall, water levels, radar, and soil moisture onto an integrated Geographic Information System (GIS) interface. Users can track water flows, community zones, and high-risk areas all in one place.

Expanding Proactive Monitoring Across 2 Provinces:
▪️Chiang Rai: Pilot-tested for flash flood tracking in high-risk zones, including Nang Lae Sub-district and Doi Luang District, projecting downstream impacts.
▪️ Nan: Expanded to respond to heavy rainfall in Pua District by actively tracking floodwaters along the Pua–Tha Wang Pha–Mueang Nan–Wiang Sa corridor, enabling timely warnings for lower basin areas.

The platform also empowers citizens to report local incidents and perform location-based risk checks—shifting disaster management from reactive response to proactive preparedness.

This initiative reflects MFU’s core mission to deliver area-based research and academic services that solve real-world community challenges, directly supporting key Sustainable Development Goals:
✅ SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): Enhancing disaster resilience and protecting vulnerable local communities.
✅SDG 13 (Climate Action): Strengthening early warning mechanisms against climate-induced weather volatility.
✅SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Fostering multi-sector collaboration among academia, government, media, and local communities.

On 17 August 2026, the Global Relations Division warmly welcomed teachers and students from Complete International Education Service, Myanmar, to Mae Fah Luang University. The purpose of the visit was to learn more about study programmes, support services, and admission process, as well as explore the university’s facilities.

A series of presentations highlighting study programmes, internships, and career opportunities was given by lecturers from the Hospitality Business Management of the School of Management, and the Beauty Technology and Cosmetic Science programmes of the School of Cosmetic Science. The delegates also received a brief introduction to the university and learned more about international student support services, student activities, and the admission process from the Global Relations Division.

Additionally, the delegates visited the MFU Aviation Business Training center, the M the Food Project, professional kitchens, and the Beauty Technology laboratories to see the practical learning spaces of each school. This was followed by a tour exploring the academic buildings, canteens, the library, and the monument of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra.

This campus tour was a great opportunity for students and teachers to gain valuable insights into the university’s diverse academic offerings and modern facilities, reinforcing the university's dedication to fostering future-ready graduates equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Experiencing campus life firsthand also helped the students gain a clearer picture of their future educational paths.

On 16 August 2026, the Global Relations Division (GRD), in collaboration with the International Student Club at Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) organised the 2nd Chiang Rai Discovery Tour. The event took a group of exchange students from various global partner universities, along with their student "Buddies," on a field trip to visit major tourist attractions and world-renowned landmarks in Chiang Rai province. The destinations included Wat Huay Pla Kang, the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), Wat Chiang Yuen, the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), and Singha Park.

This activity is part of the international student welcoming programme, which is continuously held throughout August and September 2026. This semester, MFU is excited to welcome over 40 exchange students from 10 countries, including Brunei, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The second round of the Discovery Tour was specifically designed for these exchange students and their buddies to facilitate integrated out-of-classroom learning, with the following main objectives:

• Learning Local Context through Real-world Experience: Providing an opportunity for international students to closely experience and understand the history, art, culture, and local way of life in Chiang Rai.

• Promoting Cross-Cultural Communication: Creating a space for Thai students and international friends from diverse countries to practice their communication skills, learn about cultural differences, and adapt to one another.

• Building Networks and Connections: Strengthening friendships among students while fostering a sense of belonging to both Chiang Rai province and the university.

The Global Relations Division at Mae Fah Luang University holds a vital mission to welcome and closely support international students. It is deeply committed to developing students' potential and guiding them toward becoming true "Global Citizens."

Welcoming exchange students from across the globe not only enhances the international atmosphere on campus but also drives constructive and ongoing mutual learning among international students, Thai students, and MFU staff members.

On 14 August 2026, a Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) delegation, including University Council members and executives, visited Mahidol University (MU) to exchange organisational visions. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Clinical Prof. Emeritus Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, M.D., Chairman of the Mahidol University Council.

Prof. Dr. Vanchai Sirichana, Chairman of the Mae Fah Luang University Council, highlighted MFU’s strategic development and direction. Meanwhile, Prof. Piyamitr Sritara, M.D., President of Mahidol University, together with Asst. Prof. Dr. Matchima Naradisorn, President of Mae Fah Luang University, shared administrative strategies to harness institutional strengths for higher education and societal development.

Following the vision-sharing session, Mahidol University and Mae Fah Luang University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for academic cooperation. The agreement was signed by Prof. Piyamitr Sritara, M.D., and Asst. Prof. Dr. Matchima Naradisorn, and witnessed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sittiwat Lertsiri and Asst. Prof. Dr. Phanuphong Chaiwut. The partnership aims to build learning organisations and enhance community well-being through holistic healthcare systems, advanced instruction, context-driven research and innovation, as well as the development of medical and public health professionals.

The initiative engages the School of Medicine in promoting advanced clinical research and expanding knowledge in herbal products, functional foods, and cosmeceuticals. The collaboration focuses on applying academic research and innovation to local communities and leveraging regional cultural assets to create long-term social value.

Furthermore, both universities will promote joint academic programmes, including cross-institutional enrolment for General Education courses. By combining their expertise in science, medicine, and public health, MFU and Mahidol University aim to generate practical knowledge and innovations that drive sustainable societal growth.
