Center of Excellence in Fungal Research Biodiversity, Taxonomy, Fungi, Mushroom, Phylogeny, Evolution, Molecular, Biosciences

The Center of Excellence in Fungal Research (CEFR) was established in 2015 at Mae Fah Luang University (MFLU) with the aspiration to become a leading organization in Thailand and Asia, carrying out research, training and community development in key areas of fungi diversity and application. The Center of Excellence focuses on three major areas of research excellence, productivity and community dev

elopment. These include 1) Biodiversity, taxonomy and phylogeny, and inventory of Thai fungi (pathogens, microfungi, and mushrooms); 2) Domestication and production of wild mushrooms; and 3) Novel compounds and functional food discovery from fungi. The Center has brought together staff of the School of Science and several Visiting Professors in coordinated research efforts. The staff includes microbiologists, molecular biologists, organic chemists, mycologists, plant pathologists, and post-harvest disease experts. The Center has its own international journals, Plant Pathology and Quarantine (PPQ) and Current Research in Environmental & Applied Mycology (CREAM) which are now well-established. The Center published more than 80 SCI research articles in 2014, successfully enrolled more than six new PhD students each year, is training two post-doctoral students, and participates in community development projects using edible and other beneficial fungi. By bringing together staff of MFU in concerted research efforts and with its many existing local institutes of higher learning (Chiang Mai University, KhonKaen University, King Mongkut's Center of Technology Ladkrabang, Prince Songkla University) and international collaborators (Australia, China, France, Germany, Netherlands New Zealand, UK), the Center has become the leading center in fungal research in Thailand and Asia and is one of the top two fungal research institutions in the world. In turn the Center has enhanced the image of Mae Fah Luang University as a leading academic establishment in the region. The Center has filled an important void in fungal research in this part of the world as there is presently no other organization integrating these aspects of research and deliverables.

Connecting Mae Fah Luang University to a Global Network of Fungal Research

Science knows no borders. Over the past five years (2020–2025), the Center of Excellence in Fungal Research (CEFR) at Mae Fah Luang University has served as an active international research hub, collaborating with researchers across 26 countries and 132 research institutions around the globe.

These global collaborations enable our teams to combine expertise in biodiversity, agricultural innovation, and mycology to address shared scientific challenges.

We extend our sincere thanks to all our international co-authors, visiting scientists, and global partner institutions for their trust and shared dedication. Together, we look forward to continuing to build bridges in scientific research that benefit science and society worldwide.

Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Visits CEFR

On 31 July 2026, the Center of Excellence in Fungal Research (CEFR), Mae Fah Luang University, was delighted to welcome a delegation from Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Yunnan University of TCM), China, for an academic visit.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by CEFR researchers, scientists, and staff, who introduced the Center's research activities and facilities. The visit began with a discussion session, followed by a guided tour of CEFR's laboratories on the 5th and 3rd floors, where the visitors learned about our research infrastructure, ongoing projects, and scientific achievements in fungal research.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, strengthen academic relationships, and explore future collaborations between the two institutions.

CEFR sincerely thanks all researchers, scientists, and staff for their warm hospitality and support in making this visit a success.

Scientific Seminar on DNA Sequence Alignment by Prof. Dr. Rajesh Jeewon

The Center of Excellence in Fungal Research (CEFR), Mae Fah Luang University, was honored to host Prof. Dr. Rajesh Jeewon for a scientific seminar entitled "Insights into DNA Sequence Alignment and Common Pitfalls."

The seminar was attended by graduate students and researchers from CEFR, providing an excellent opportunity to deepen their understanding of DNA sequence alignment and its critical role in molecular biology, phylogenetics, and fungal taxonomy. Prof. Dr. Jeewon shared valuable insights into alignment strategies, highlighted common mistakes encountered during sequence analysis, and discussed practical approaches to improving the accuracy and reliability of molecular datasets.

The interactive session encouraged participants to engage in thoughtful discussions, ask questions, and gain practical knowledge from Prof. Dr. Jeewon's extensive experience in molecular systematics and fungal research.

CEFR sincerely thanks Prof. Dr. Rajesh Jeewon for delivering an informative and inspiring seminar. His valuable expertise and guidance continue to strengthen the research capacity of our students and researchers while promoting excellence in molecular and taxonomic studies.
