“Development of Community Water Storage System for Flooding Mitigation: Learning from Japan’s Rain Garden to Build Community Resilience in Thailand”
under the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Mae Fah Luang University and The Sumitomo Foundation.

💧 This project aims to promote community-based water management for flood mitigation by adapting Japan’s rain garden concept to the Thai context, fostering resilience and sustainability.

The Disaster Resilience and Environmental Sustainability (DRES) Program, ARCID, School of Social Innovation at Mae Fah Luang University, successfully organized an Online Expert Sharing entitled "Green Politics and Urban Disaster in the Geography and Development." The event, held on 18 February 2025, featured a presentation by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ica Wulansari, International Relations Studies, Paramadina University, Indonesia, from 03.00 PM onwards (ICT), moderated by Ajarn Maya Dania.

This insightful event covered three critical topics: 1) Green political theory explores the interconnectedness between economic development and population growth of human resulting crisis, 2) from the perspective of social justice and environmental justice, urban disasters can lead to maladaptation among the poor, loss of livelihoods, and displacement from their homes and 3) the importance of mainstreaming ideology of ecologism which limits in the theory of limit to growth.

This topic aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), mainly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

The lecture attracted over 20 participants from Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar.

Congratulations to our lecturers from the DRES program for their remarkable achievements in the Scopus citation rankings within the Social Sciences and Humanities field.

Asst. Prof. Maya Dania is ranked 20th, Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanwalee Inpin is ranked 21st, and Dr. Yuki Miyake is ranked 26th.

This recognition reflects their exceptional contributions to academic research and scholarship in their respective fields.

Congratulations to all DRES Members, Ms. Reni Juwitasari, Dr. Yuki Miyake, Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanwalee Inpin and Ajarn Maya Dania, in collaboration with Dr. Sawang Meesaeng, on publishing their work in Thammasat Review (Scopus Q3) entitled "Toward Resilient Communities through Machizukuri on Post-Recovery Disasters: An Analysis of the Social-Ecological Actions in Kumamoto, Japan," funded by Sumitomo Foundation under Grant for Japan-related
Research Project.

This research article concerns the empowerment of bottom-up governance of the Japanese model, Machizukuri, in post-recovery disasters in Kumamoto, Japan. This area was hit by two devastating disasters, the 2016 Earthquake and the 2020 Flood. From both experiences, Japan has shown the key important aspects of social and natural capital in disaster recovery. This research is significant because studying Machizukuri, grasgroot decision-making level, has remarkably important implications for people participatory, especially in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities. Learning the role of local people in disaster recovery and realizing the more-than-human aspect can ensure sustainability for both humans and nature.

On 19 - 22 November 2024, Ms. Maya Dania, a lecturer at the School of Social Innovation, and Ms. Reni Juwitasari, a researcher at the Asian Research Center for International Development (ARCID), School of Social Innovation, represented Mae Fah Luang University at the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) conference, hosted by Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya, Indonesia.

The Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) is a regional organisation that aims to promote cooperation and collaboration among higher education institutions in Southeast Asia. Founded in 1956, ASAIHL works to enhance the quality of higher education in the region and to facilitate academic exchanges, research collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge among universities and institutions of higher learning. Mae Fah Luang University is an ASAIHL member.

This year’s conference theme, “University’s Role in Advancing Climate Crisis Reduction,” provided a critical platform for academia to address one of the most pressing global challenges. Contributing to this significant dialogue, Ms. Maya Dania presented her research titled “Curriculum Integration of Climate Crisis Topics at Mae Fah Luang University: Findings from Classroom Research.” Meanwhile, Ms. Reni Juwitasari shared her research, “Strengthening School and Community Resilience: University Roles in Climate Crisis Management.”

🌍 Navigating Gender Equality, Resilience, and Well-Being in the Age of Climate Change 🌿

On 16 November 2024, the Disaster Resilience and Environmental Sustainability (DRES) Program, ARCID, School of Social Innovation, Mae Fah Luang University proudly hosted the UNESCO Chair Kobe Online International Symposium, where experts and researchers from five countries presented groundbreaking insights on the intersection of gender equality, resilience, and climate change adaptation.

The symposium emphasized how intersectionality—examining overlapping identities like gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status—can enhance resilience strategies for vulnerable communities, fostering well-being and sustainability. The presentation was addressed by
1. Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysia, titled “Climate Change Impact on Annual and Seasonal Rainfall Variability: A Case Study in Simunjan, Sarawak,” examines the shifts in rainfall patterns and their broader implications.
2. National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST), Taiwan, with a presentation on “Challenges and Opportunities of Climate Change for Female Seafarers,” which delves into the unique experiences of women in the maritime sector under changing environmental conditions.
3. Kobe University, Japan on “The Importance of a Gender-Transformative Approach to Climate Change,” exploring strategies to integrate gender equity into climate resilience efforts.
4. Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand, on “Multi-Dimensional Gender Impacts from Climate Disasters in Chiang Rai Province,” highlighting case studies from the region.
5. Shifa Tameer e Millat University, Pakistan, examining the “Impact of Climate Change on Health and Well-Being Among University Students,” a study with significant implications for youth health policies.

The event was welcomed by the Dean of the School of Social Innovation and the Head of UNESCO Chair Kobe University. With over 60 participants, this collaborative event championed innovative solutions to build a more inclusive and sustainable future. 💡🌱

The Disaster Resilience and Environmental Sustainability (DRES) Program, ARCID, School of Social Innovation at Mae Fah Luang University, successfully organized an Online Expert Sharing entitled "Building Resilience: Flood Risk Management, Community Adaptation and Humanitarian Action in Malaysia." The event, held on 7 November 2024, featured a presentation by Mr. Hafiz Amirrol, Deputy Executive Director of MERCY, Malaysia, from 01.00 PM onwards.

This insightful event covered two critical topics: 1) strategies for managing flood risk from engineering solutions like flood barriers, to community-centered initiatives that focus on preparedness and adaptation, and 2) humanitarian-nexus that combines disaster preparedness with long-term goals.

This topic aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), mainly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

The lecture attracted over 50 participants from both Thailand and Myanmar.
