What is “Yoga”? - From conscious control to absorption 🪷

Previously in Part 1, we explored Samyamana, the first context of Yuj, where yoga begins with conscious effort, bringing awareness to the breath, movement, body, thoughts, and actions.

With continued practice, this conscious effort gradually becomes natural. You no longer have to constantly remind yourself to be aware.

This is the second context of Yuj, Samādhi, a state of absorption. The separation between practice and daily life begins to dissolve. You move, eat, listen, speak, and act with the same meditative awareness. Dualities are absorbed. The tendency to discriminate between likes and dislikes, right and wrong, good and bad, gradually becomes quieter 🧘

Samādhi is not something to rush toward. It takes time, sincere practice, and patience. For now, simply keep practicing. 🌿

✨Part 3 coming soon, where we explore the final context of Yuj, union. 🙏🏼

Utkaṭāsana (Chair Pose) — hands together or apart?

Both variations are useful, but they create slightly different experiences in the posture.

🙏 Hands together
Bringing the palms together in front of the chest encourages the shoulders to relax and can make it easier to keep the chest open. It also brings the attention inward and adds a sense of steadiness and focus.

🙌 Hands apart / reaching overhead
Keeping the arms apart and reaching upward creates more space around the shoulders and chest while adding more demand on the upper body. It can also challenge shoulder mobility and postural awareness.

Neither variation is better. The right choice depends on your body, mobility, intention, and what you’re practicing that day.

Good yoga practice isn’t about making every posture look the same. It’s about understanding why we practice it and finding the variation that serves the practice. 🌿

A certificate is not the reason we begin the journey. The real gift is what we learn, experience, and discover along the way. 🌿

But when we finally hold that little piece of paper, there is still a quiet joy in it. A reminder of the days we showed up, the challenges we moved through, and the commitment we made to ourselves.

May it be less a symbol of what we have achieved, and more a reminder of where the journey continues 🙏🏼🪷

If you feel called to deepen your practice and explore yoga more fully, we welcome you to join our Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand.

A vegetarian diet is one way we practice “ahimsa”, the yogic principle of non-harming 🌿

We understand that not everyone is vegetarian, and we fully respect that. During our Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand, we simply invite students to experience a yogic vegetarian lifestyle for a few weeks and observe how it feels physically, mentally, and emotionally. For many, it’s an opportunity to try something they’ve always been curious about in a supportive environment.

In this short snippet of hands-on adjustment for Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Fold), our teacher demonstrates where and how to apply force in hands-on assistance and how timing of the breath is essential in exploring greater depth in a posture. Every body is different, so an adjustment should always respect the student’s unique structure, flexibility, and breath.

Learning when, how, and why to assist a student is an important part of becoming a safe and confident yoga teacher. It’s not simply about technique, but about developing sensitivity, observation, and clear communication.

These practical skills are part of both our 200 Hour and 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand, where students spend time learning alignment, hands-on adjustments, teaching methodology, and the principles behind every assist.

The red and yellow thread tied at the beginning and end of our Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand is more than a tradition. It is a reminder of a sankalpa, a heartfelt resolve to stay committed to the journey with sincerity, discipline, and an open mind.

The tilak placed on the third eye symbolizes inner awareness, clarity, and purity of thought. It is a gentle reminder to look beyond the physical practice and approach yoga as a path of self-discovery, wisdom, and transformation.

These small rituals carry a deeper meaning, inviting us to remember that yoga is not only something we practice. It is something we gradually live.

What does “Yoga” really mean?

Before yoga becomes a state of deep stillness, it begins with conscious effort.

In Sanskrit, words are often understood through their verb roots, with different meanings revealed through different contexts. The word “Yoga” comes from the Sanskrit verb root “Yuj”, which is traditionally explained through three contexts: Samyamana, Samādhi, and Yoga.

In this first part, our philosophy teacher explains how yoga starts with Samyamana, or conscious control. Every time we choose to bring awareness back to the breath, align the body with intention, or gently guide the wandering mind inward, we are already practicing yoga.

Over time, what begins as conscious discipline gradually becomes effortless. This natural unfolding leads us toward the next stage of yoga, Samādhi, a state of deep absorption, which we’ll explore in Part 2.

These are the kinds of discussions our students explore during our Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand, where philosophy is not only studied, but reflected upon and lived through daily practice.

Sometimes, the best classroom has no walls. ☁️🏔️

During our Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand, we take time to step away from the yoga shala and reconnect with nature. These moments on Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail, Doi Inthanon remind us to slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

Walking above the clouds beneath a clear blue sky, we were reminded that yoga is not only practiced on the mat. It is also found in presence, simplicity, and the moments we share together.

If you’re looking for a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand that combines traditional yoga studies with meaningful experiences in nature, we’d love to welcome you to Yoga Samaadhi.

““Yoga Samaadhi delivered everything I expected… and more.” 🙏” - Joel -

Joel originally considered to complete his 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in India because he was looking for an authentic and traditional yoga experience. After joining Yoga Samaadhi in Thailand, he shared that the course delivered everything he had hoped for and more.

In this reel, Joel talks about our well-structured curriculum, how each subject is given dedicated attention, and how yoga philosophy beautifully connects every aspect of the practice. Coming from a background as a sports coach, he also found the anatomy classes insightful and appreciated the depth of knowledge, experience, and guidance shared by all of our teachers.

One of his biggest realizations was that asana is only the tip of the iceberg, and that yoga has so much more to offer beyond the physical practice.

If you’re looking for a traditional and holistic Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand, we hope Joel’s experience gives you a glimpse into what it’s like to study with us at Yoga Samaadhi in Chiang Mai.
