Nakornpayap International School (NIS) was founded in 1993. Based in Chiang Mai, Thailand all classes are taught using the English language.

It is a comprehensive, secular international school using a United States curriculum altered for the cultural and language needs of students at all grade levels within South East Asia. Meet Mr. Akash Ananda Kumar Murali, joining NIS as a High School Computer Science Teacher.

Originally from India, Mr. Akash holds a Master’s degree in Computing Science from the University of Glasgow and a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. His experience spans both university and high school education in the UK, where he discovered how naturally his passion for technology connects with his passion for helping students learn, grow, and build confidence.

For Mr. Akash, Computer Science is about more than learning to code. His classroom is a space for problem-solving, creativity, experimentation, and hands-on learning, where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and exploring what technology can make possible.

From programming and practical projects to emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, he encourages students to approach Computer Science with curiosity and confidence.

Outside the classroom, Mr. Akash enjoys exploring new technologies, cooking, watching anime, reading, and travelling. He’s also looking forward to discovering more of Thailand’s culture and traditions.

Meet Ms. Leah Wang, joining NIS as a Grade 4 Homeroom Teacher.

Originally from Seattle, Washington, Ms. Leah holds a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Washington and a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood and Family Studies. Now in her seventh year of international teaching, she brings three years of dedicated Grade 4 classroom experience to NIS.

At the heart of her approach is the belief that children learn best when they feel supported, valued, and confident to explore. Through creative, hands-on experiences, Ms. Leah encourages curiosity and helps students discover the joy of learning while growing as individuals and as part of a collaborative community.

Outside the classroom, she enjoys spending time with her husband and dog, getting creative with arts and crafts, and staying active with friends.

We’re excited to welcome Ms. Leah to NIS and look forward to the curiosity, creativity, and positive energy she brings to Grade 4.

We’re delighted to welcome Ms. Nin Manosoi back to NIS as Co-Head of the Thai Department.

With more than 17 years of experience in international education, Ms. Nin has taught Thai language learners from primary through high school, working with both native Thai speakers and students learning Thai as an additional language.

Her journey with NIS began in 2012, where she taught Thai until 2019. Now, she returns to the community with extensive experience and a teaching philosophy rooted in context-driven learning, helping students connect language to the world around them.

Through a literacy-based approach, Ms. Nin brings stories, literature, everyday experiences, and the surrounding environment into her lessons, making Thai language learning meaningful, relevant, and engaging.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Thai Language from Chiang Mai University and brings a deep belief that language learning is about more than words, it is about building connections with culture, people, and the world.

Welcome back, Ms. Nin. We’re excited to have you leading the next chapter of Thai language learning at NIS.

Welcome Back, Mr. Matthew McDaniel!

Some returns feel like coming home.

After first joining NIS as a Grade 5 teacher in 2017–18, Mr. Matthew McDaniel returns to a school community that has always held a special place in his heart, this time as our Grade 5 Mathematics teacher, and with his two children joining him at NIS.

Mr. Matthew holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh. In his classroom, he believes learning should spark curiosity, encourage collaboration, and help students build confidence in their ability to solve problems and think critically.

Beyond the classroom, Mr. Matthew enjoys great food, staying active, and travelling with his family, especially when it means discovering new places, cultures, and experiences around the world.

We’re delighted to welcome Mr. Matthew back to NIS and look forward to seeing him inspire our Grade 5 students.

Meet Mr. Louis Carmichael, who joins NIS as a Middle School Social Studies teacher, bringing a fresh perspective shaped by anthropology and international teaching experience.

Originally from Hull, England, Mr. Louis holds a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Goldsmiths, University of London, and completed his teaching qualification at the University of Hull. He brings three years of teaching experience across the UK and international schools, working with students from Grades 4 through 9.

For Mr. Louis, great learning begins with an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, exploring ideas, and thinking creatively. He believes there is no such thing as a silly question, and that giving students the freedom to think for themselves can inspire meaningful growth both inside and outside the classroom.

Outside of school, Mr. Louis enjoys performing improv comedy, playing 7-a-side football, and catching the latest films at the cinema.

A remarkable achievement for Punn, Grade 5! 🤖🏆

At the APRA Thailand Championship 2026 (Asia Pacific Robot Alliance), a national robotics and youth championship, Punn achieved 1st Place as Northern Region Representative, qualifying for the National Competition.

He then went on to secure 3rd Runner-Up in the Relay Mission – Elementary category, earning the opportunity to represent Thailand at the APRA International Final 2026.

Punn has been selected as a Thai youth representative to compete in the international final, which will take place in Taiwan on November 14, 2026. 🇹🇭🇹🇼

From representing the Northern Region to representing Thailand on the international stage, Punn’s journey reflects the power of curiosity, creativity, teamwork, and determination.

Congratulations, Punn! We’ll be cheering you on!

Meet Ms. Kate Day, the newest member of our Middle School team, teaching English Language Arts.

Originally from the UK, Ms. Kate brings 25 years of international teaching experience, having taught students of different ages and backgrounds across the UK, Australia, Japan, Austria, Taiwan, and Thailand. Her longest teaching experience was with the British Council in Chiang Mai, where she spent 13 years.

For Ms. Kate, learning English goes beyond preparing for exams. Her approach is grounded in engagement, context, and motivation, creating opportunities for students to understand why what they learn matters. She also recognises that every student learns differently and strives to create learning experiences that reflect those individual needs.

Outside the classroom, Ms. Kate enjoys staying active through weight training and yoga, which she also teaches. She loves spending time in nature, being around animals, and enjoying the simple things in life.

We’re excited to welcome Ms. Kate to NIS and look forward to the perspective, experience, and energy she brings to our Middle School community.

We’re delighted to welcome Ms. R back to NIS as Head of Thai Department, Thai Curriculum and Accreditation Coordinator.

After more than ten years teaching Thai at NIS, Ms. R returns with a wealth of experience and a deep connection to our school community. She joins us again after eight years at another leading international school, where she served as Head of Thai Department and taught as both an Early Years and Elementary Homeroom Teacher.

In her new role, Ms. R leads the development and implementation of the Thai curriculum from Kindergarten through Secondary School, while supporting meaningful learning experiences that help students connect with the Thai language, culture, and their own sense of identity.

She believes every child learns best in an environment where they feel safe, valued, and confident. Her approach focuses on nurturing curiosity, encouraging a love of reading, and empowering students to become independent, lifelong learners.

With a Bachelor of Arts in Thai Language from Payap University and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Chiang Mai University, Ms. R brings both expertise and experience to her return.
