The Ending of Asian Culture Station, (but the Conversation continues…)
Sunday, 31 March 2019 at Asian Culture Station,

The last public event of Asian Culture Station which has been operated for three years. With our appreciation to receive your warm welcome since the opening on the 26 August 2016, we opened a casual roundtable in order to exchange opinions about the current situation of Chiang Mai art scene in the last three years and the near future. This gave us a chance to update each other situation and together drive a movement that takes strength to our art community in the future.

Furthermore, we invited “Chiang Mai Collective” to visit and create a site-specific artwork. The one-day exhibition is titled “Aesthetic of Error”.

กิจกรรมสุดท้ายของโครงการ Asian Culture Station (ACS) หลังจากให้บริการมานานถึง 3 ปี ก่อให้เกิดความมีส่วนร่วมผ่านการจัดกิจกรรมที่หลากหลาย กิจกรรมที่จัดขึ้นโดยโครงการที่ผ่านมาแล้ว ประกอบไปด้วย 14 Mini Talks, 3 สัมมนานานาชาติ, 5 นิทรรศการ, 1 การแสดง และ 4 การอบรมเชิงปฏิบัติการด้านการเขียนเกี่ยวกับศิลปะ นอกจากนี้ทางโครงการยังได้ให้บริการชุมชนทางศิลปะเข้ามาใช้ห้องสมุด อินเตอร์เน็ต และขอใช้พื้นที่สำหรับกิจกรรมสาธารณะ, การเรียนรู้เชิงปฏิบัติการ และการพบปะพูดคุยระหว่างผู้เชี่ยวชาญโดยไม่คิดค่าใช้จ่าย

ในวันสิ้นสุดโครงการนี้ ด้วยความรู้สึกขอบคุณทุกท่านที่ให้การต้อนรับโครงการ Asian Culture Station มาเป็นอย่างดีตั้งแต่วันแรกที่เราเปิดตัว ณ วันที่ 26 สิงหาคม 2559 เราจึงชวนผู้ที่เคยร่วมงานกับโครงการและผู้สนใจทั่วไปมาร่วมเป็นเกียรติให้กับโครงการอีกครั้ง ในรูปแบบร่วมเสวนาโต๊ะกลมอย่างเป็นกันเอง เพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็นถึงสถานการณ์ความเคลื่อนไหวในวงการศิลปะในเชียงใหม่ที่ผ่านมาในรอบสามปีนี้และอนาคตอันใกล้ เพื่อร่วมกันผลักดันความเป็นไปได้ที่ชุมชนศิลปะของเราได้เกิดความเข้มแข็งต่อไป

นอกจากนั้น เนื่องจากพื้นที่แห่งนี้จะถูกใช้งานในโครงการเป็นอาทิตย์สุดท้าย เราจึงได้เชิญศิลปินกลุ่ม Chiang Mai Collective มาสร้างนิทรรศการ เฉพาะพื้นที่ขึ้น โดยจะเป็นนิทรรศการที่ใช้ชื่อว่า “Aesthetic of Error” อีกด้วย

art4d มีโอกาสได้พูดคุยกับ สุทธิรัตน์ ศุภปริญญา หนึ่งในผู้ก่อตั้ง Chiang Mai Art Conversation (CAC) ถึงที่มาขององค์กรศิลปะไม่แสวงหาผลกำไรแห่งนี้ว่า ไอเดียเริ่มแรกคือการทำงานสเกลใหญ่ๆ อย่างเทศกาลศิลปะ ก่อนจะค่อยๆ ลดสเกลลงมาทำสิ่งที่สำคัญและเป็นรากฐานก่อนนั่นคือการทำงาน archive

CAC มีสถานที่ทำการเป็นเรื่องเป็นราวครั้งแรกในปี 2016 เมื่อได้รับเลือกให้เป็นพาร์ทเนอร์กับ Japan Foundation ในโปรเจ็คต์ Asian Culture Station (ACS) ตั้งอยู่ที่นิมมานเหมินท์ ซอย 4

ตอนนี้ CAC เปิดทำการมาได้ 6 ปีแล้ว ต้องรอดูกันต่อว่ากิจกรรมต่อๆ ไปของพวกเขาจะเป็นอย่างไร เพราะล่าสุด กิจกรรมสุดท้ายของโครงการ ACS จะมีขึ้นในวันที่ 31 มีนาคมที่จะถึงนี้แล้ว

art4d talked with Sutthirat Supaparinya, one of the founders of CAC - Chiang Mai Art Conversation discussed the origin of this non-profit art organization of which the initial idea was to develop a large-scale event such as an arts festival before reducing the scale down to the essence and foundation of it all—archiving.

CAC’s official office was established in 2016 when it was chosen to be partner with the Japan Foundation for the Asian Culture Station (ACS) project, which is located on Nimmanhaemin Soi 4.

With CAC now entering its sixth year of operations, while their more activities are something that remains to be seen. Recently, the last public event of the Asian Culture Station will be held on 31st March 2019.

Mini Talk 【 The Buddhist Archive of Photography in Luang Prabang 】 by Khamvone Boulyaphonh / Saturday, 9 March 2018, 2 - 5 pm at Asian Culture Station, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Asian Culture Station and The James H.W. Thompson Foundation is pleased to invite you to a talk by Khamvone Boulyaphonh, a researcher and director of the Buddhist Archives of Photography. The Buddhist Archive of Photography is a discovery of a large and varied body of Theravada Buddhist photographs in the monasteries in Luang Prabang.

The UNESCO world heritage site of Luang Prabang has been the centre of Lao Buddhism and culture since the mid-fourteenth century. Theravada Buddhism has flourished in this ancient city since then.

The Buddhist Archive of Photography is only one kind of this archive in Laos, located at Sala Thammavihan in Vat Suvannakhili, Luang Prabang. A large corpus of more than 35,000 photographs (prints and negatives) found in the monasteries and private collections in Luang Prabang date from AD 1880s up to our own days. The most photographs appear monk portraits, monastic life and rituals, political and social events, pilgrimages, travels, personalities, and etc., were taken during the last century.

Asian Culture Station และ The James H.W. Thompson Foundation ร่วมกันจัดการบรรยายของ ดร.คำวอน บุนยะพอน นักวิจัยและผู้อำนวยการแห่ง The Buddhist Archives of Photography โครงการสำรวจภาพถ่ายจำนวนมหาศาลของศาสนาพุทธนิกายเถรวาทจากวัดทั่วหลวงพระบาง

“หลวงพระบาง” เมืองที่องค์การยูเนสโกได้รับรองให้เป็นมรดกโลก เป็นศูนย์กลางของพุทธศาสนาและวัฒนธรรมของลาวมาตั้งแต่กลางศตวรรษที่สิบสี่ ที่ซึ่งศาสนาพุทธนิกายเถรวาทเองก็ได้เจริญรุ่งเรืองนับแต่นั้นมาเช่นกัน

The Buddhist Archive of Photography ตั้งอยู่ ณ ศาลาธรรมวิหาร วัดสุวรรณคีรี หลวงพระบาง เป็นสถานที่เพียงแห่งเดียวในลาวที่ได้เก็บรวบรวมภาพถ่ายและฟิล์มกว่า 35,000 ชิ้น จากวัดและผู้คนในหลวงพระบาง โดยเป็นภาพที่ถูกถ่ายตั้งแต่ พ.ศ.2420 จนถึงปัจจุบัน ส่วนใหญ่เป็นภาพถ่ายบุคคลและวิถีชีวิตของพระสงฆ์ พิธีกรรมทางศาสนา เหตุการณ์บ้านเมือง การจาริกแสวงบุญ ท่องเที่ยว รวมไปถึงภาพถ่ายส่วนตัว ฯลฯ ในช่วงศตวรรษที่ผ่านมา

เขาแบ่งข้อมูลความเป็นมาและความเป็นไปของตลาดแห่งนี้บอกเล่าในหนังสือเล่มเล็ก 5 เล่ม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นในมิติของประวัติศาสตร์ ผังการจัดการพื้นที่ ป้ายร้าน ผู้คนท้องถิ่น รวมถึงบันทึกเสี้ยวส่วนบรรดาชีวิตอันร้อยรัดพันผูกกับ Binh Tay นับแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1930 โดยรูปแบบของหนังสือได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากสมุดโทรศัพท์ที่ชายคนหนึ่งใช้จดเนื้อเพลงที่เขาชอบแทรกปะปนลงไปกับข้อมูลหมายเลขติดต่อพ่อค้าแม่ค้าในตลาดนั่นเอง

Le Quoc Huy เคยจัดแสดงผลงานหนังสือทั้ง 5 เล่มดังกล่าวในนิทรรศการ Chợ * Nhà เนื่องในโปรแกรม Mini Show ที่ Asian Culture Station เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2017 (bit.ly/2kjeFbI / youtu.be/vEmOeHu_KKs)

Thank you for the publication set of “Chợ * Nhà” from our friend, Le Quoc Huy, a Vietnamese designer who behind “The Lost Type Vietnam” project. Chợ * Nhà shows the story of Binh Tay Market, the long-standing traditional wet market in District 5 — the China Town of Ho Chi Minh City.

Start with this inspiration by seeing an old man use his telephone directory book to writing lyric of his favorite songs. Interspersed with the phone number of the seller, the food store in the Binh Tay market.

They arranged the stories collected in the 5 books by the names of the booth in the market. The five books are associated with the themes surrounding their history, planning, signboard, people, and lifestyle.

Le Quoc Huy presented the story about this project once on the Mini Show program at Asian Culture Station in 2017. (bit.ly/2kjeFbI / youtu.be/vEmOeHu_KKs)
