ไม่สะดวก (mai sa-doo-uck) translates to "not convenient” but it’s commonly used as a means of politely declining almost anything without causing offense. Thai culture prioritizes consideration for others' feelings with a custom called เกรงใจ (greng jai) and in a culture where “saving is face” is paramount, giving a direct "no" can feel too blunt or aggressive. ไม่สะดวก acts as a way to soften this interaction by implying that one is declining not because they want to but because other circumstances prevent accepting.

This is also used as a means of politely declining when one actually wants to say no. One of the interesting aspects of this term is that, socially, it is usually accepted at face value. In many Western contexts, "I'm not convenient" might prompt a follow-up ("Why? What's wrong?"). In Thailand, it is a signal that the conversation on this topic at this point should end. It allows the person to maintain their privacy while keeping the social harmony intact.

ก็ได้ (gau dai) is a colloquial phrase that - literally translated - means "also can" or "also okay," but this can vary depending on your tone and the context. Here's a few ways it's commonly used:

"Sure, we can do that too" is probably the most commonly used meaning and it indicates that a choice or an alternative is acceptable.

"Fine" in reluctant acceptance. When someone suggests something and you aren't exactly thrilled but are willing to go along with it, you might say "ก็ได้"

"Sure, why not?" when giving permission. If someone asks for a favor or permission, adding ก็ before ได้ (which means "can") softens the response. It makes it sound more casual and less formal than a strict "Yes."

Because ก็ได้ often implies a level of concession (giving in), be careful with your tone. If said with a soft one then it sounds easy-going and flexible. If spoken with a short or sharp tone then it can sound dismissive, annoyed, or like you’re saying "Whatever, do what you want."

ปากดี (pbahg dee) literally translates to "good mouth" but its actual meaning is quite the opposite. It’s typically used to chastise someone who speaks back rudely to a superior or a parent. You may also hear it used sarcastically to describe someone as rude, arrogant or talkative in a provocative way as it implies that they may speak without thinking or are quick to challenge or talk back. The phrase is almost never a genuine compliment and usually carries a negative connotation, often implying that the person's words are a source of annoyance or trouble.

ธุระ (tú-rá) in casual conversation moves away from its formal meaning of "official business" and becomes a convenient way to talk about personal errands, responsibilities, or even to give a hint of "mind your own business." When you need to leave or can’t take a call, for example, you don't always need to explain why. You can use this term to imply you have something to do that may be a private matter you’d prefer not to be specific about. Ex: "มีธุระ" (mee tú-rá) = I have things to take care of -or- "ไปธุระก่อนนะ" (bpai tú-rá guan ná) = I’m off to run some errands first.

ฟิน (fin) is what one might say when they're experiencing a moment of pure bliss, extreme satisfaction, or euphoria. It's that "peak" feeling when everything feels absolutely perfect and you couldn't be happier. You’ll hear it used when someone takes the first bite of a world-class meal or when they're getting a deep, painful but satisfying feeling during a traditional massage.
