The 3rd and final day of the City Nature Challenge 2026: Mueang Chiang Mai began at the Choeng Doi Suthep Wildlife and Nature Education Center, where participants explored plants, fungi, and lichens in the lowland deciduous forest of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park while continuing to develop their iNaturalist survey skills. Through close observation of tree bark and the forest floor, participants discovered the importance of small and often overlooked organisms in supporting resilient forest ecosystems. In the afternoon, the group traveled to Mae Hia Farm for a birdwatching session focused on bird identification techniques and species observation in an agricultural landscape. Participants practiced patience and careful observation by identifying birds through both sight and sound.

Day 1 of the City Nature Challenge 2026: Mueang Chiang Mai began at the Doi Suthep Nature Center, where participants learned about the rich biodiversity that exists within urban spaces in Chiang Mai and the importance of conserving green spaces throughout the city. Mr. Anupon Jumpeekhao from the Mae Sa Kog Ma Biosphere Reserve also spoke about the role forest ecosystems play in supporting both wildlife and local communities, highlighting the close connection between people and nature. Participants were then introduced to the iNaturalist app and trained on how to document and identify species through photography and observation. Applying these skills during a biodiversity survey at the Huay Kaew Arboretum, participants explored the area to record and identify a variety of plants, insects, and birds.

On Day 2, City Nature Challenge participants gathered near Ang Kaew Reservoir to explore the biodiversity of aquatic plants, insects, and amphibians while learning survey techniques and how to use iNaturalist. Faculty from the CMU Biology Department led a hands-on activity where participants examined aquatic organisms collected from nearby canals and expressed their observations through drawings of species. In the evening, the group continued with a nighttime biodiversity survey at Karn Memorial Park, documenting frogs, insects attracted to light traps, and other nocturnal wildlife such as owls.

🌏City Nature Challenge 2026: Mueang Chiang Mai
Residents of Mueang Chiang Mai were invited to join us for the three-day event to become citizen scientists using iNaturalist. Participants learned about the importance of biodiversity in the city through educational briefings and hands-on activities, then documented their observations using the iNaturalist application.

🪴Day 1 at Doi Suthep Nature Center
Participants of all ages explored connections among green spaces, diverse species, and communities, with Mr. Anupon Jumpeekhao from Mae Sa Kog Ma Biosphere Reserve.

From there, they learned how to use the iNaturalist application to turn their observations into knowledge, then took their skills to the Huay Kaew Arboretum and began photographing plants, animals, and insects for species identification.

🪳Day 2 at Ang Kaew Reservoir
Participants analyzed aquatic insects and plants collected from the water through microscopes, demonstrating their knowledge by drawing and painting species they had discovered.

As evening approached, we relocated to Karn Memorial Park in search of nocturnal insects and amphibians. Participants ventured out with flashlights and found many species of insects, frogs, and an owl.

🍄Day 3 at Choeng Doi Suthep Wildlife and Nature Education Center & Mae Hia Farm
We started the morning off slowly at Choeng Doi Suthep Wildlife and Nature Education Center by searching for plants, fungi, and lichen, blending into tree bark or the forest floor.

In the afternoon, participants moved to an open agricultural landscape at Mae Hia Farm for birdwatching, having to use silence and quick reflexes to their advantage.

Using iNaturalist, participants engaged in a friendly competition, and those who made the most observations received unique prizes!

Part-time field officer assistant (suitable for CMU student)

FORRU-CMU is looking for a part-time assistant to help our field officer to manage our field plots and tree nurseries. Duties would include:
1) Assisting with pre-planting site surveys and implementation tree planting events, maintenance and monitoring.
2) Assisting with management of FORRU-CMU tree nurseries and planting stocking production.
3) Assisting with collection and analysis of data from nursery and field experiments and 1st-drafting technical reports.
4) Occasionally helping our education team with outreach activities that make use of nurseries or the field plots, occassionally.
5) Able to communicate in Thai and English.

This part-time post is suitable for a CMU student (particularly Biology or ES Programs), who would like to gain work experience in a field, relevant to their degrees or thesis topics. Working time is flexible but should average around 10 days per month.
