Tom Karen's Center

Tom currently needs money to finish construction on the center, which will have a total cost of $2,500 to build.

Tom Karen's Center works to educate and empower the 102 Karen ethnic minority children of Baan Huaisak village in Northern Thailand through better English education and traditional Karen cultural activities. Tom Karen's Center educates and empowesr the children of the Baan Huaisak village through after-school education and the Karen traditions of organic farming, wilderness survival, and cultural

arts and dance. Better education outside of school will help the poorer children of Baan Huaisak (Tom's village) keep up in school with the kids from richer communities and prevent them from dropping out of school, which puts them at higher risk of becoming trapped in poverty and falling into drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution, or being trafficked to the urban centers of Thailand. Over the past 6 months, Tom already invested a lot of his own money he earned as a tour guide and used it to build the primary classroom, but he needs your help to raise rest. It's with deepest sadness that we must share with you that our dear friend Sakkawan Sommuang (Tom Karen, Founder of Tom Karen's Center) passed away this evening after a short but very intense battle with liver cancer. He was surrounded by family and was peaceful at the end - our thoughts and prayers are with them.

We are in the process of launching an ambitious fundraising campaign to support his family and the ongoing work of Tom Karen's Center. We ask for your support in helping to ensure his legacy and the well-being of his children, Mini and Guitar, as well as his wife, Mod.

We are actively seeking allies who would support the fundraising efforts, either monetarily or through helping reach potential donors. We will reach out to some of you directly, or please feel free to comment below or message the page.
