🔬 Research Highlight | Understanding the Cellular Effects of Kratom

🌿 How does mitragynine—the major active compound in kratom—affect peripheral nerve cells?

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) has traditionally been used for its analgesic properties and is increasingly used as an opioid substitute. However, the molecular consequences of prolonged mitragynine exposure on the peripheral nervous system remain poorly understood.

Professor Pasarapa and her research team investigated how mitragynine affects Schwann cells, the major glial cells supporting peripheral nerves, using an integrated quantitative proteomics and systems biology approach. Importantly, AMPK emerged as a potential central regulatory hub, suggesting a possible link between cellular energy stress and the molecular adaptations associated with mitragynine exposure.

💡 These findings provide new molecular insights into how prolonged mitragynine exposure may affect Schwann cell function and potentially contribute to analgesic tolerance and peripheral neurotoxicological risk.

📖 The study, “Integrated quantitative proteomics reveals stress-associated network remodeling induced by mitragynine in RSC96 Schwann cells,” has been recently published in Archives of Toxicology.

• สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับ ปริญญาเอก สาขาเภสัชศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ ชีวเคมี ชีววิทยา ชีวเวชศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์การแพทย์ หรือสาขาที่เกี่ยวข้อง
• มีประสบการณ์ด้าน Mammalian Cell Culture และ Molecular Biology Techniques เช่น Western blot, RT-qPCR, genetic manipulation และ immunofluorescence
• มีผลงานตีพิมพ์ในวารสารระดับ Q1/Tier 1 ในฐานะ First Author
• สามารถวางแผนและดำเนินงานวิจัยได้อย่างเป็นระบบ มีความรับผิดชอบ และสามารถทำงานร่วมกับทีมได้ดี
• มีแรงผลักดันในการสร้าง high-quality research & publication

New Research Publication from the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology

🎉 Congratulations to Professor Pithi Chanvorachote and research team on the publication of their latest study in Scientific Reports !

🔬​Researchers developed DH_27, a novel synthetic derivative of the marine natural product Renieramycin T, and demonstrated its potent anticancer activity against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study showed that DH_27 effectively suppresses lung cancer cell growth and colony formation by inhibiting the mTOR signaling pathway, inducing mitochondrial dysfunction, and triggering apoptosis. Molecular docking analysis further revealed a strong interaction between DH_27 and the mTOR complex, supporting its proposed mechanism of action.

✴️ This work highlights the potential of marine-derived natural product-inspired compounds in advancing precision cancer therapeutics.

Welcoming Students from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Airlangga!
The Department of Pharmacology & Physiology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chulalongkorn University, was delighted to welcome undergraduate pharmacy students from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia, for a special academic visit.

During their visit, the students participated in our "Drug Journey Workshop: Introduction to Preclinical Evaluation", where they explored the essential stages of preclinical drug development. The program included: 🧪 An overview of the drug discovery and preclinical development process.

🔬 An introduction to in vitro and in vivo studies
🐭 A guided tour of our Laboratory Animal Research Unit.
🧫 Hands-on experience with the cell viability assay in our cell culture laboratory.

We hope this short course provided valuable insights into preclinical research and inspired the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists. 🌱💊

Thank you to the students and faculty from Universitas Airlangga for visiting us. We look forward to strengthening our academic collaboration and fostering future opportunities in education and research.
