[Thailand Worlds School Debating Championship 2023 - Organized by Pathumwan Demonstration School]

4 Teams from the Anglo Debate Society took part and competed in the Thailand Worlds School Debating Championship (TWSDC) on the 4th to 6th of March. The teams are as follows:

Anglo 1 - Yuen Bing (JC2) , Marvin (JC2), Peem (S4)
Anglo 2 - Opal (JC2), Punn (JC1), Xingyi (S4), Jedi (S4)
Anglo 3 - Yolia (S4), Kendo (S4), Jason (S4), Win (S4)
Anglo 4 - Yuna (S3), Jack (S3), Keke (S3), JJ (S3), Mooky (S3)

The tournament was an exciting journey for all the teams involved, filled with thrilling victories and hard-fought battles. Anglo 1 blazed through the competition with unstoppable force, winning all five rounds in a row and demonstrating unwavering determination that left their opponents in awe.

Similarly, Anglo 2 proved to be a formidable opponent, securing wins in four rounds and displaying an unrelenting spirit in every match.

Anglo 3 faced their opponents with fierce passion, overcoming various obstacles to emerge victorious in all their impromptu and one of their prepared rounds, falling just short of the Quarterfinal Break. And for the debaters in

Anglo 4, this tournament marked an unforgettable debut, as they impressively won two rounds against some of Thailand's toughest teams.

The journey culminated with Anglo 1 and 2 advancing to the quarterfinals, their eyes fixed on the coveted trophy. The intense competition and thrilling victories along the way had been a true test of their skill and determination, and a source of great pride for all the teams involved.

Nevertheless, we would like to congratulate and applaud our very own best speakers: Peem, who got 1st Best Speaker, (2 in a row!!!), Xingyi with 2nd Best Speaker + 3rd Best Reply, Marvin taking home the 4th Best Speaker Award, and lastly Yuen Bing getting 8th Best Speaker + 2nd Best Reply!!! Not to mention, our Best Novice Speakers! Mooky received the 4th Best Novice Speaker, Jack brought back the 5th Best Novice Speaker Award, and lastly Yuna achieving the 7th Best Novice Speaker!

The tournament provided an immense opportunity for personal growth, particularly for those whose performance did not align with their expectations. While mistakes were inevitable, each debater gleaned valuable insights from the experience. Although the competition was marked by a series of ups and downs, everyone had a remarkable time interacting with debaters from across the Thailand Debate Circuit, including our fantastic coaches, P'Boat and P'Name. Although we experienced both victories and defeats, we all emerged from the event with a deeper understanding of the intricacies of debate, and moved closer to unlocking our full potential.

[Thailand High Schools Debating Championship 2022 - Organised by Triamudom Suksa School]

On the 28th to 30th of October, 6 teams from Anglo Debate Society took part in the Thailand High Schools Debating Championship (THSDC). The teams are as follows:

Anglo 1 - Yuen Bing (JC2), Nod (JC1), Peem (S4)
Anglo 2 - Luca (JC1), Punn (JC1), Xing Yi (S4)
Anglo 3 - Powpiang (JC1), Ohm (JC1), Jedi (S4)
Anglo 4 - Mint (JC1), Proud (JC1), Yolia (S4)
Anglo 5 - Ming (JC1), Kendo (S4), Win (S4)
Anglo 6 - Jason (S4), Keke (S3), JJ (S3)

Of the 6 teams, ASISC64 1, 2 and 3 managed to break into the quarterfinals, coincidentally with ASISC64 1 and 3 having to go up against each other. ASISC64 1 reigned victorious, unfortunately eliminating their fellow schoolmates in the process. Since ASISC64 2 also won their round, both teams eventually progressed into the semis.

Sadly, it was during this round that ASISC64 1 bowed out, but ASISC64 2 continued to push forward and ended up in the grand finals against PDS 2! After a long-awaited and close round (3-2 split :o), the verdict eventually went to ASISC64 2, who took home the championship for this tournament!!

We would also like to congratulate our best speakers: Peem, who got 1st best speaker; Yuen Bing, who got 3rd; Xing Yi, who got 6th; and Nod, who got 9th. In addition, Win was awarded the 3rd best novice speaker.

This tournament was a step back into onsite debating for many of us, and I’m sure we can all collectively agree that we learnt a lot, not only from our teammates and competitors, but also our adjudicators and coaches. Familiar faces were spotted during the tournament as well - debaters from Triam Udom, PDS, RIS, Shrewsbury, ICS and many other schools! We made lots of friends from the Thailand Debate Circuit, who we will probably continue to encounter in future tourneys to come.

[ICYD Oxford Finals 2022]

On 23 - 24 April, Anglo Behemoth, consisting of Jedi and Peem (Sec 3), represented Anglo Debate Society in the International Competition for Young Debaters Finals 2022. This competition was a follow up to the previous ICYD 2022, with the top 5 breaking entering this final competition. It was a hybrid debate tournament, meaning the majority of teams were in Oxford debating, while a small number of teams were online debating. Anglo Behemoth met several different teams from all over the world, from Canada to India.

Throughout the night, Anglo Behemoth debated valourously from 3 PM to 2 AM in the morning. Although the opponents were powerful, sleep was a contributing factor. But with fearlessness and determination, Peem and Jedi pushed through, fighting for their righteous place.

As a result of their dauntlessness, they emerged somewhat victorious, coming out of the preliminary round with 8 points, with 2 first places and 2 third places. Hence, they were able to make it to the Newcomer Finals. They plunged straight into the finals, with courage in their hearts, and brought out their sword of words, to clash with the other teams. They faced 2 powerful top debate teams from Canada and another top debating school from India. They did not fight in a calming grass field either. Instead, it was more like a chaotic warfilled land, with gunfire coming from every possible angle. They had to fight through western liberal democracies, debating about human rights and trade. They gave everything they could, but, at the end of the night, their swords backed down, and cracked, under the skill of their fellow debaters. Impressive performance coming from both Jedi and Peem, being able to make amazing speeches, under the pressure of drowsiness. But, Peem’s sword cracked in a much fancier way, ending the tournament coming out as the 5th best speaker out of all the newcomers!

Although Anglo Behemoth did not win the finals, they came out with a newfound ability to debate under tough circumstances. In the end of the day, they came out, as true behemoths, being able to carry home the experience and new knowledge.

‘The experience was amazing; we learnt all sorts of new strategies and skills, and we truly learned a ton from this’ - Peem.

We thank all parents for your continuous support to Anglo Debate Society.

[ICYD East Asia 2022]

Anglo Debate Society sent four teams to the International Competition for Young Debaters East Asia 2022, hosted by LearningLeaders and Oxford Union on 26-27 March 2022. Our student debate teams consisted of:

- Anglo Behemoth (Peem and Jedi S3)
- Anglo Shorties (Onyx and Xing Yi S3)
- Anglobotimizeus (Jason and Mumi S3)
- Anglo YK (Yolia S3 and Keke S2)

Our Sec 2 and 3 students debated valiantly over 5 rounds on motions ranging from the narrative of parental sacrifice for their children, increasing permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, and subsidising companies to hire ex-convicts, among other challenging topics.

Anglo Behemoth (Peem and Jedi S3) emerged as the 5th breaking team, ranking above top debate schools in the region, and respectfully bowed out in the Quarterfinals after a tough round. As the 5th breaking team, Anglo Behemoth also qualifies for the final ICYD Oxford tournament on 23rd April. Well done guys and good luck next month!

Anglo Shorties, Anglo YK, and Anglobotomizeus all had a great learning experience in BP! This was also the first BP tournament for Keke S2, who joined us on this occasion!

Special shoutout to Mumi from Anglobotomizeus for ironpersoning Round 2 and ranked 2nd place in the round! You are a legend for doing two speeches in the same round!

Finally, we thank all debate parents for your support always! See you in the next tournament!
