Apiwan Nuangpolmak, PhD, is our co-teacher for Seminar 1, Education Reform: Prioritizing Education Reform to Prepare for ASEAN Integration, which starts Monday.
Apiwan Nuangpolmak received a BA (English) from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand before completing a Master’s in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) followed by a PhD in Linguistics from Macquarie University, Australia.
Her Master’s dissertation entitled “Task Motivation in Writing: A Case Study of Thai Students” and the PhD thesis on “Facilitating Language Learning Through a Multilevel-task Approach” reflected her research interests, which include material development, motivational strategies, fostering learner autonomy and writing instruction.
Apiwan is currently a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) where she teaches English for Academic Purposes, Spoken English for Fine and Applied Arts Profession, and Skills in English for Graduates.
Additionally, she is working on two research projects, namely “An Evaluation of Instructional Materials for Experiential English” and “Awareness and Use of English Learning Strategies among Unsuccessful Learners”.

Introducing Assistant Professor Suchada Nimmanit, also a coordinator and Distance Learning instructor on the LMI 2 team:
Suchada has a BA (Hons) from Chulalongkorn University and a Master’s of Education from Pennsylvania State University. She is a PhD candidate, Macquarie University. Her international experiences include teaching Japanese businessmen at Language Institute of Japan, Female Parliamentarians of Lao PDR under UNDP, government Officials of Vietnam under RIHED, SEAMEO sponsorship, and members of the Cabinet from Mongolia. She served as President of Thailand TESOL, TESOL Inc. Board of Directors, and Chair of TESOL Inc Nominating Committee. Suchada was coordinator for Thailand for the LMI Phase I English project, English for Specific Purposes seminars for mid-level government officials form Cambodia, Lao PDR, Vietnam and Thailand.
Her other work includes studies on motivation and strategies of a successful Thai student, collaborative learning in text chat and face-to-face discussions, and learner-assisted language learning in text chat and face-to-face discussions.

Linda Darling-Hammond is Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education at Stanford University where she is Faculty Director of the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education. She is a former president of the American Educational Research Association and member of the National Academy of Education. Her research and policy work focus on issues of educational equity, teaching quality, and school reform. In 2008, she served as director of President Obama's education policy transition team. Her book, The Flat World and Education: How America’s Commitment to Equity will Determine our Future, received the coveted Grawemeyer Award in 2012. Her most recent book is Getting Teacher Evaluation Right: What Really Matters for Effectiveness and Improvement (2013).
