The Jataka School

We are open 🎉 Our Founding Families Orientation and very first day of school brought the Jataka community together to begin our year.

We started with a boundary walk, as teachers led students around the perimeter of our campus, securing the boundary with flowers and good wishes. Families lit candles and made an aspiration for the year ahead.

From there: meeting teachers, playing in our classrooms, trying on our new uniforms (designed by Philip Huang NYC) — and then, the moment we’d all been waiting for, our first cohort walked through our doors as Jataka students for the very first time.

An auspicious start | This week, The Jataka School staff welcomed Tulku Ngawang Tenzin, a Himalayan Buddhist lineage holder and teacher, that oversees Buddha Pada Kalimpong - a contemporary center for the study and practice of Dharma.

The team gathered in our Sala while Tulku Ngawang chanted verses of auspiciousness and ‘The Treasury of Blessings’, a practice of Buddha Shakyamuni. He then shared some insights into the essence of shrine keeping and of the habit of making offerings. A site consecration followed, as Tulku recited prayers throughout our learning spaces.

At Jataka, we are not tethered to one single Buddhist tradition or path. Our students grow up exposed to the rich array of varied Dharma traditions — different teachers, lineages, and histories — and will cultivate a facility in meditation, whether or not they choose to label themselves as Buddhist.

Our name draws on what we believe is the collective value of the stories known as the Jataka tales. The Jataka are stories, recounted by the Buddha, of his past lives. They are stories of cause and effect that, taken together, recount his journey to awakening across many lifetimes. In that same spirit, The Jataka School aims to support each child, and each member of our community, on their own journeys of awakening — to find the path that speaks to them.

Tulku Ngawang Tenzin is one of many teachers and guides we are honoured to welcome at Jataka over the months ahead.

This week, our three-week orientation comes to a close and our doors open to students this Tuesday.

Alongside PDPA and safeguarding training, our team completed first aid training, ensuring every staff member is prepared to care for your children with confidence.

Each morning began with a contemplative sitting practice, led by different members of our teaching staff. We believe the greatest gift a teacher can bring to your children is their presence.

On the pedagogical side, we deepened our work with Middle Way Education, exploring the Dharma-based learning goals at the heart of our curriculum, alongside Conscious Discipline training and setting up our classrooms and learning spaces.

Living our values also meant stepping outside the classroom to explore the Thai concept of ‘len’ — dern len, gin len, nang len — wandering, eating, and sitting together, including a visit to the Buddha hall at True Digital Park and an outing to Udomsuk Market.

Our educators are ready. We can’t wait to welcome your children this Tuesday.

This week, our founding staff came began a three-week orientation. These precious weeks together are an important part of our work. They allow us to inquire, reflect, and deepen our understanding, so we can open our classrooms with greater intention and a quality of presence that supports your children to thrive.

In our first few days, we’ve reflected on our founders’ intentions and vision, explored our Buddhist-based approach to communication, conducted safeguarding trainings, deciphered the Jataka VIEW, upskilled in play-based learning, and examined our Jataka curriculum. Getting to know one another, sharing perspectives, and listening deeply has been a rewarding and at times touching experience for many. Thich Naht Hanh’s words on the importance of empathy, and his view of understanding as the ground for love was particularly poignant.

We were also privileged to receive an audience with Phra Ajahn Anil Sakya of Wat Bowon, who shared insights on how to introduce the Dharma to children in playful ways and emphasized the importance of human values that guide us to use our knowledge and skills in kind and altruistic that benefit all.

This week is a small but meaningful milestone, and we are excited for what August will bring.

The Jataka School opens to Early Years students 24 August 2026.

For three months, the monastic community turns inward. Monks and nuns commit to staying in one place, with one community, deepening their meditation practice and study of the Vinaya (monastic code).

For the rest of us, it is an invitation to define some edges of our own: a season of morning flower offerings, a pledge to read something inspiring each evening, or a daily ritual that deepens contemplative practice.

It’s the same principle we try to build into how children learn. In staying with something—a place, a skill, a community—we allow both discipline and atmosphere to emerge: a dedication, a way of being, a quality of presence.

Stories shape us. We’re delighted to share that has joined The Jataka School as a Founding Library Partner — contributing books across every age we teach, from our youngest readers to our oldest, and a staff collection for our teachers too.

This partnership runs deeper than books alone. Shambhala’s roots and ours run through the same lineages of teachers and community — a shared history that makes this new chapter feel less like a new partnership, and more like a natural next step.
We’re excited to fill our shelves with Bala Kids stories that are rooted, inspiring, wholesome, and wise, and to soon bring author talks and events to our campus too.

We’re thrilled to share that The Jataka School has received official approval from the Ministry of Education.
This is a major milestone in our journey—one that reflects the strength of our vision to redefine education, our commitment to excellence, and marks an important step forward as we prepare to open our doors in August 2026.
