✨ Celebrating Thai New Year – Songkran Festival 💦🌸
In the spirit of the Thai New Year, our students came together to celebrate Songkran through a meaningful and culturally rich activity. They expressed their respect and gratitude to Dr. Indrajit Pal by performing the traditional Rod Nam Dam Hua ceremony.
This beautiful tradition symbolizes humility, respect, and the passing of blessings from teachers to students. During the ceremony, students poured scented water over the hands of their respected professor and humbly asked for his blessings—not only for the festive season but also for success in their upcoming examinations.
Moments like these reflect the strong bond between teachers and students, rooted in respect, culture, and shared aspirations for the future. 🌏✨
May this Songkran bring joy, good health, and success to everyone.
Happy Thai New Year! 🇹🇭💙

Field Study Day 2 – Course IN84.04: Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management – Theory and Practice
Led by Dr. Indrajit Pal, our students continued their immersive learning journey in Rayong with visits to the Pak Nam Ban Rao fishing community at Saeng Chan Beach and the Mangrove Learning Center at Phra Chedi Klang Nam.
The second day focused on understanding the environmental and socio-economic impacts of grey infrastructure development and past oil spill incidents on coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods. Through group interviews and open dialogue with community members, students gained valuable insights into:
• The changing coastal landscape and erosion challenges
• Impacts of oil spill events on fisheries and household income
• Community experiences with environmental recovery efforts
• Government-led mangrove management and multi-stakeholder support
At the mangrove learning center, students also explored green infrastructure initiatives, particularly projects designed to use mangrove ecosystems as natural nurseries for aquatic species. These nature-based solutions demonstrate how ecological restoration can strengthen resilience, support biodiversity, and enhance sustainable livelihoods.
Day 2 reinforced a key lesson: disaster risk reduction is not only about infrastructure — it is about people, ecosystems, governance, and collaboration. Listening directly to the voices of the fishing community deepened our understanding of resilience in practice.

Field Study Highlights – Course IN84.04: Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management – Theory and Practice
Our students, under the leadership of Dr Indrajit Pal, began Day 1 of their field study with an insightful visit to Leam Chabang Beach, which concluded with the Port Authority of Thailand – Laem Chabang Port and the Ban Laem Chabang Community Mangrove Forest in Chonburi.
This field experience focused on understanding the environmental impacts of large-scale grey infrastructure on coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods. Students explored how port development influences community life, natural resources, and risk dynamics in surrounding areas.
At the mangrove site, we learned about community-based mangrove management, where local residents actively conserve and restore coastal ecosystems with support from private organisations. Through group interviews with community members, students gained first-hand insights into:
• Environmental changes linked to port expansion
• Impacts on fisheries and traditional livelihoods
• Community adaptation and resilience strategies
• Collaborative governance and external institutional support
The discussions highlighted the importance of integrating local knowledge with policy and institutional frameworks to strengthen disaster risk reduction and sustainable coastal management.
A meaningful first day of learning beyond the classroom — connecting theory to real-world practice, and listening directly to the voices of the community.
