A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE

The show begins the the music of Duncan Allan, who plays the role of a street singer positioned under a streetlamp. Allan strums his guitar and leads us into the show as the Narrator, announcing the the arrivals of Blanche (Claudia Liu), Stella (Sarinya Olsson), Stanley (Clement Phanavanh), and Mitch (Matas Danielius). The cast does an excellent job at presenting ensemble theatre. The acting is strong, consistent and appropriate for the intimate space of 60 seats.
This production has been cleverly adapted by Director Loni Berry, where the story is told by five actors, instead of the twelve in Tennessee Williams’ original script. Several scenes have been omitted, which frankly, I did not miss. I particularly enjoyed the ending of the play, which was decided by the audience. We all voted by secret ballot and anxiously awaited the outcome. Clever.
The set, designed by Monsuntorn Surach, is compelling and captures the essence of the play. The lighting, designed by Thachaporn Jirasakkee, gives the play the dark, mysterious feeling the story needs.
I attended the 2nd performance, which was one of the Masked Ball nights. The audience was set up with tables and chairs, along with candles and flowers – a nice touch. The masks added additional enjoyment, as did the tasty food and drink. I brought my own mask, but the theatre had a selection of fanciful options that were on loan from the box office table.
The play is being performed for two more weekends, ending March 1st. This is a rare opportunity for Bangkok audiences to see such a fine production of this American classic. I urge you to go! Congratulations to Culture Collective Studio!
