I recently carried out a hold condition survey at Port of Tilbury, London at the request of the charterer, covering the cargo holds, external hull structure, and main deck areas surrounding the holds.

Before loading, it is essential to clearly establish the as-found condition of the vessel’s cargo spaces. A proper hold condition survey helps confirm that the holds are clean, structurally sound, and suitable for the intended cargo, while also identifying any issues that could later lead to claims or disputes.

During the inspection, attention is typically given to:
• Cargo hold plating, frames, tank tops, and bilge areas
• Condition of coatings, corrosion, and any physical damage
• Hatch covers, seals, coamings, and drainage arrangements
• Main deck areas around the holds that may affect watertight integrity

Early identification of defects or deficiencies allows corrective actions to be taken before loading, reducing operational risk, cargo damage, and off-hire or claim exposure.

Hold condition surveys remain an important part of risk management and loss prevention, providing all parties with a clear, factual baseline supported by documented evidence.

Hold condition survey များသည် risk management နှင့် loss prevention အတွက် အရေးပါသော အစိတ်အပိုင်းတစ်ခုဖြစ်ပြီး ပတ်သက်သူအားလုံးအတွက် မှန်ကန်သော အခြေအနေအခြေခံချက် (factual baseline) ကို အထောက်အထားများနှင့်အတူ ပေးစွမ်းနိုင်ပါသည်။
