A certain Dharmic fact can be elucidated: all sentient beings strive for happiness and have an aversion to suffering. I once harbored a desire: ‘If I could afford to live in the house of my dreams, it would bring ideal happiness to my life.’ Now, I live a life that seems practically surreal, as my desire has been fulfilled. I wake up every day to remind myself that this is my new home. I no longer have to deal with vexing neighbors, endure parking my car in brutally hot weather, or climb three floors to bring a tray of food to my father. However, I can’t help but feel like this won’t last.

Despite attaining these fulfillments, I feel a lack of something. Ideal happiness seems to elude true existence. When a disagreement or dispute ignites, all I think about is leaving everything behind and vacating to live somewhere only I know. The Buddha’s teachings reflect the insightful perspective of the world. He teaches us to recognize that all things remain impermanent, undergo inevitable sufferings, and culminate in non-self. It is the single mind of ours that remains and continues the journey. We come alone and go alone. Nothing can be taken with us at both the beginning and the end.

Regardless of the spaces in this house, the refined decorations in the premises, and the location in the surroundings of a fruitful and yielding green garden with a valley-like scenic backyard, all seem to mean nothing to me when my heart suffers. Revered father Chah at Nong Pa Pong Temple once preached on a life aspect: ‘The word ‘family’ in Thai, when looked at literally, can be defined as a boundary - a place where creaking, stabbing, and jabbing sounds of sharp objects can be heard along with palpable heat and pain. When two or more people live together, it’s like teeth and tongue that sometimes work together, sometimes bite each other.

I no longer obsess over matters of “love”. When I studied the teachings of the Buddha, I came to understand the truths of my existence and contemplated them deeply.

Being a man or a woman is just a form of dressing. If you look inside the human body, it’s composed of things that emit foul odors at all times. But our skin, which covers our body, conceals this truth. We are captivated by only what our eyes, ears, nose, and mouth can perceive from the outside.

In the past, when I saw a man, I would be consumed by desires for procreation. The mental process of idealization completely overtook my mind. I got lost in the appearance of the man and my own appearance, wasting time and resources on a relationship that had no real happiness. In the end, we both had to part ways.

Today, seeing people getting married, being in love, or engaging in mating behavior gives me the creeps and a sense of amusement, although I might still have some admiration and desires to experience those emotions again (lol! Not yet fed up with it, huh?). However, when I recall the truths taught by the Buddha, I bring my wandering mind back home to a state of tranquility. I contemplate that I don’t want to experience any more heartbreak, pain, grief, or tragedy, nor do I want to feel jealousy or have to be constantly suspicious in the relationship. Being in a relationship with someone feels like playing a game, but I’m not skilled at playing games. I prefer to be alone like this. I find great happiness in it. Nowadays, I don’t have the burden of looking after anyone more than I do my parents, who are my sun and moon, whom I cherish the most. I want to express my gratitude for the life that allowed me to walk the path of wisdom and to have faith in the teachings of the Buddha.

I love my life in the aspect that the Buddha and his teachings lead my life.
