"It's a long way and a very difficult way." — Clement, on the journey of a gemstone.

We caught up with Clement at the Hong Kong show, fresh from our August Brazil expedition. Students went underground together and watched production happen at the mines.

His advice to future travellers is simple: understand the difficulty and the magic behind every stone, from the mine to the market, and you will be successful.

Not all rubies are created equal 💎🔴
Color, clarity, cutting, and carat — the four factors that separate a fine ruby from the rest. Swipe through our Essential Buying Guide to shop smarter.

Color: The highest-quality rubies have vivid color saturation. The color must be neither too dark nor too light to be considered finest quality. The ideal hue ranges from pure red to slightly purplish-red — stones that lean too orange or too purple are valued lower. The most prized color, often called "pigeon blood" red, is a vivid, slightly purplish red with strong saturation and medium-dark tone.

Clarity: Ruby value depends on how visible the inclusions are. Obvious inclusions, or inclusions that reduce transparency or brightness, lower a ruby's value dramatically. Nearly all natural rubies contain some inclusions and a completely flawless natural ruby is extremely rare and commands a significant premium. Inclusions are not automatically a flaw; what matters most is whether they affect brightness and transparency, and whether any fractures compromise the stone's durability.

Cutting: Rough ruby crystals commonly form in a flat, tabular hexagonal shape, though crystals from certain sources can be more elongated. Because of this flat rough shape, cutters often favor oval, cushion, or pillow shapes to maximize yield, while round brilliant cuts are comparatively rare and can command a premium. A well-cut ruby balances proportion and symmetry with the gem's dichroism.

Carat Weight: Fine-quality rubies over one carat are very rare, and commercial-quality rubies are commonly available in a wide range of sizes.

There's a reason certain gems stop you in your tracks.

Meet chromium — a single trace element responsible for some of the most coveted colors in the gem kingdom. Swap it into a different mineral, and it transforms completely:

In corundum, it becomes ruby red.
In beryl, it deepens into emerald green.
In chrysoberyl, it performs a color-change trick — green in daylight, red under incandescent light. That's alexandrite.
In garnet, it works alongside iron to create demantoid's rare, fiery green.
In spinel, it glows as a vivid, saturated red.
In tourmaline, it produces the coveted chrome variety — richer and rarer than ordinary green tourmaline.

An Unusual Sn(Tin) Glass-filled Ruby that gem professionals should Watch For!

This 0.95 ct ruby appeared to have undergone only traditional flux-assisted heat treatment. EDXRF analysis combined with X-ray imaging, however, confirmed that the stone was a tin (Sn) glass-filled ruby.

Lead (Pb) glass is the most commonly used filler, although other elements such as bismuth (Bi) and cobalt (Co) have been detected in treated rubies and sapphires encountered on the market.

Whereas traditional Pb glass-filled rubies commonly display obvious gas bubbles and orange/blue flash effects, neither feature was observed in this Sn glass-filled sample. The stone was therefore more difficult to identify, and gemologists should be wary of this apparently new type of glass filling.
