"ACTOR-DRIVEN" SHORTS FORUM
Upstairs, The Royal Oak, Sukhumvit 33/1
2-3pm Sunday, 6th March
Dear Actor,
For years, I've advised up-and-coming actors wanting to know how to get started, to "star" in their own short film. Since "film-making technology" continues to get less expensive, and more simple-to-use, this advice has become increasingly relevant and realistic.
Several actors who regularly attend my workshops, have already taken the first steps towards scripting their own shorts. And since making a film, even at the simplest level, is a complex undertaking, prior to this Sunday's Screen Actor workshop, I'm holding a one hour FORUM. This Forum is an opportunity for local actors to discuss the feasibility of group produced, "actor-driven" short films, to consider their own availability for the project, and to give some indication as to whether they could realistically make a commitment.
WHY WAIT FOR THE NEXT MOVIE TO COME TO THAILAND?
It has never been easy for a new actor to get a "break". Though Casting Directors make it very accessible for local actors to audition for an international feature film, less of these high-profile productions are coming here.
Most of the roles tend to be for Day Players (an actor hired for single day to appear in a couple of scenes), and if cast, the actor will still need to wait at least a year for the scene(s) to become available for use on their reel.
Using the cheap and simple-to-use technology(for shooting & editing etc) available these days, a group ethic, and my guidance, the main benefit of the proposed project is to by-pass traditional paths, and fast-track an actor's ability to the screen.
PLAY A ROLE, THAT YOU WANT TO PLAY
The primary purpose of the project is to facilitate the best possible work of the actor, playing a character of their own choice and creation, in a short film (and for scenes from the short to be used in the creation of the actor's showreel).
By producing as a group, each participant plays the LEAD in their own film (MINOR ROLES in others), and possibly providing production/technical support to other films.
Once, everyone in the group has completed their own short, there will not only be films that can be screened individually, but a body of work which could even be featured at international film festival.
WHY MAKE A SHORT FILM?
In my experience of working with international Directors, Producer, and Casting Directors, when assessing the potential suitability of an actor, after seeing the headshot, reading the resume, all that is left is to view the actor's "best work".
A fast-cutting montage of clips from the numerous productions demonstrates the actor's ability to land work, but little about their ability to act. The actor's "best work", is far more evident and compelling, from a link to a dialogue scene (approx. 60-90 seconds), be it funny, scary, or moving. (And one of each would be impressive!)
The type of short film I'm proposing would be an ideal canvas for an actor to demonstrate their ability, professionally. With my guidance, actors should self-script the short, giving them the opportunity to not only consider more deeply their respective characters, but to better understand what makes a well-written scene. Production values may not match those of a movie, but the finished film should look and sound professional.
PRODUCTION GUIDELINES
To have a realistic chance of seeing these shorts completed within a reasonable time-frame, I'm suggesting some strict guidelines (though they can be broken!). The productions should have a "near-zero" budget and no more than a 2 day schedule. "Self-scripted", then with a minimal unit, shot in existing light, at freely-available locations, using found props etc, captured by a hand-held camera, and then edited, sound mixed and colour corrected at home on a PC or Mac.
GROUP ETHICS
First of all, no matter how technophobic you are, do not let cameras or computers stop you from taking up this challenge. So, long as you keep your film simple (see guidelines above), then there will be a way to make it. Similarly, despite production and technical assistance, you are ultimately responsible for finishing your own film. (Only shoot hours & hours of footage, if you're prepared to log and edit all those shots yourself.)
It is essential for the group to know itself. That means knowing who is in the group, and getting acquainted with each actors' ability and personal qualities etc. For developing script and characters, the workshop sessions are ideal, (usually 3 hours on Sunday, though a weekday slot maybe possible too), but meeting/communicating outside of workshop hours will be necessary from-time-to-time, and especially prior to filming. The group needs to organise itself, and know what resources could be available for the production (eg. free locations). (Please do not loan expensive equipment to other films, unless you come with it!) The ideal, but unapplicable rule is "to put in (to the films of others), at least as much as others have put into your film.
Should you be interested in the project, could you email me, giving me some indication of what mornings, afternoons and evening you are usually available, between now and May.
The Forum is free for actors participating in the Screen Acting Workshop from 3-6pm. Otherwise, there is a small charge of 300 baht for those only coming for the Forum. If you would like to attend the Forum and/or the Screen Acting Workshop, would you be kind enough to confirm by email.
If you cannot make the Forum on Sunday, but are interested in participating in the Project, please email me, and I will get in touch shortly.
Sincerely,
Kaprice Kea
