In Vietnam, rural families consisting of only women and children are particularly vulnerable to poverty because the number of dependents is higher than the available labor force. Therefore, girls at school age are likely to quit school and become low-pay unskilled labours with the hope that they could bring their families out of the vicious cycle of poverty! Sekong Province is one of the poorest provinces in Laos, Southeast Asia. Infrastructure is poorly developed, with few having access to clean water and sanitation, and the literacy rate is extremely low. Most of people live under the poverty line and children are at high risk of abandon their education to work as child labour to survive their poor families. (www.edf-international.org)

Thousands of Cambodia's school-age children in the rural areas are forced to abandon school every year to work as a low-pay menial worker due to poverty. After his father passed away and mother became disabled, Nhes Ron (Third from the left), 12-year boy from Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia , and his 2 boy siblings, 16 and 14 years and a 16-year girl cousin have to struggle to survive by their own. They usually go out at night to find frog, crab, shell or fish for the meals in the next morning and also for sale in the market and earn only 1,500 riel ($0.37) a day which is not enough for their schooling and they might soon drop out from schools to be unskilled workers for the survival of their family. After her father passing away in 2011, May, a 13-year girl from Sekong, Laos PDR and her family; her mother and 5 siblings, has been facing an even worst situation as her mother is uneducated and unable to find work to earn enough income to support the family. Her elder sister had to drop out school to help her mother work as low pay unskilled labor to earn more income.

May’s mother tells her many times to leave school and help work and earn for the family like her elder sister does, but later, she realizes that if May is not educated, her future will be bleak and the family will be unable to overcome poverty.
As a result, May decided to apply for EDF-International scholarship support for the coming school year 2014 in order to help release her mother's burden in supporting her education.
