STORY 006
Is there a street beggar problem in your city?
Bangkok has a street beggar problem. There is literally no area in the city where you can go and not run into someone begging for money. You will find beggars on big streets, under bridges, in busy markets and outside crowded office buildings. They are young, old, men, women and children. There are blind musician beggars and handicap ones. There are even beggars with horrible birth defects or gruesome injuries. Many of the beggars are not Thai, but Asian foreigners from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. Like the girl and baby in this picture. I saw her begging on a sidewalk not far from my apartment. I asked where she was from and she told me Cambodia (she spoke in Thai). She also said the only way she could make money in Thailand was to become a s*x worker or to beg. She preferred to beg. It’s difficult to say how many of these people are forced into this way of life. Certainly, poverty and lack of opportunity make most of them choose this difficult way to make money. I’m not sure what the solution is, or if there is a solution. But Bangkok has a street beggar problem for sure. Is there a beggar problem in your city?

STORY 005
Do you have street dogs in your city?
Some have estimated that Bangkok has more than 120,000 street dogs. It’s impossible to walk around the city without running into these cute little fury fellas. They’re just about everywhere, and for the most part they are totally harmless. They bark more than they bite. In most cities around the world, these dogs would be gathered up and put to death, but not in Bangkok. The government tried to do this in the 1990’s, but the public protested against it. Most Thais believe that to kill the dogs is a violation against their Buddhist beliefs. The government was forced to adopt a pro-life dog policy. On the other hand, it has been widely reported that thousands of the dogs in Thailand are rounded up every year and exported to Cambodia, Vietnam, and China, where they are killed and eaten. Dog meat is big business in those countries. Thai people don’t eat dogs. They would rather feed them as a way of making Buddhist merit. As you can see in the picture; someone has given this little guy a tasty piece of fried chicken. Some of these street dogs have it pretty good. Do you have street dogs in your city?

Last week I traveled to three beautiful areas in southern Thailand to begin filming a six part series called Siam Island Hopper. We had a great time and I got to shoot video and fly my video drone in some really amazing locations. You can see me in this picture, flying the drone in an beautiful beach side cave in Krabi. Luckily I didn't crash or lose the drone while flying over many dangerous locations, like open ocean, jungle and rivers. I will share some video clips soon!

STORY 004
How free is your country?
Look at these two beautiful students from Thailand. Do you notice anything special about them? They are Thai, they are university students, and they are women. Aren’t they? Well they are women now, but they used to be boys. In Thailand, Transgender Men and Women have a great amount of freedom. They can live openly and be students, work in offices, be entertainers, be models, and do pretty much anything they like, without too much discrimination. They do not have complete equality in the culture, but compared with many other countries in the world, Transgender men and women, and Gay men and women are widely accepted in Thai society. Every country gives different freedoms to its people. What is acceptable for one culture may not be acceptable for another. How free is your country for Gay and Transgender people?

Just returned from a 1 week video shoot in the beautiful islands of Thailand. We followed two travelers as they enjoyed many fun and interesting activities. Next month we'll travel to 3 more islands to film more travel adventures of our two hosts. We will visit Koh Samui, Koh Pangan, and KohTao. This will be a 6 Part Video Series for Thailand's number one beer company, Singha. I will share the videos when they are finished. OK! More Easy English stories starting tomorrow. ENJOY!

STORY 003
What kind of traveler are you?
There are many different kinds of travelers in this world. And my favorites are travelers that “wear their culture”. I call them “unique travelers”. As the world becomes more globalized, more and more people are following generic western fashion trends. I’m American, and I dress like an American. I’m generic I guess. And when I’m walking down the street in a T-shirt, shorts and Vans sneakers, I could be from anywhere. People ask me if I’m French, Brazilian, Canadian, British. I’m a “generic traveler”. Most of us are generic I think. But some travelers are unique travelers; like this Korean girl dressed like a Buddhist nun. Maybe she was a nun, or maybe she just liked the costume, but she was “unique”, not “generic”, and her clothing told you something about where she’s from. I like that. What kind of traveler are you?

STORY 002
How do you feel when you get on an airplane?
I love every time I can get on an airplane and go somewhere new. But I hate getting on big airplanes. I love flying, but big airplanes make me nervous. Jumping out of an airplane with a parachute would be better than sitting inside an airplane for hours. Of course I know the facts. Flying is safer than driving a car. In fact, it’s more dangerous to drive to the airport than to fly on the plane. But it still makes me nervous. Not afraid, but nervous. I think it makes everyone nervous. That’s why we all look forward to the in-flight meal, and the in-flight magazine, the in-flight movie, and the in-flight alcohol. They help us forget that we are flying through the air in a giant tin can with wings. I love traveling, but I hate flying. How do you feel when you get on an airplane?
