ใครจะไปคิด สุขภาพฟันบ่งบอกสุขภาพจิตของเด็กได้

รู้ไหมว่าแค่การตรวจสุขภาพฟันอาจทำให้ทราบว่าเด็กๆ มีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดีหรือไม่ ซึ่งถือเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่ก่อให้เกิดความเสี่ยงกับปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิตได้เลยทีเดียว

เมื่อทำการวิเคราะห์ฟันที่หลุดออกมาแล้ว นักวิจัยพบว่ามีความเกี่ยวพันกับพฤติกรรมด้านแย่ๆ ของเด็ก หากตรวจพบเร็วจะทำให้เด็กๆ ได้รับการช่วยเหลือทางด้านจิตใจได้ทันก่อนที่ปัญหาจะลุกลาม

ดร.อีริน ดันน์ (Dr.Erin Dunn) จากโรงพยาบาลแมสซาชูเซตส์เจเนรัล (Massachusetts General) ทำการวิเคราะห์ฟันน้ำนมและสุขภาพจิตของเด็ก 37 คน มานานหลายปีและพบว่าเด็กที่เคลือบฟันบางคนมีแนวโน้มพบปัญหาด้านสุขภาพจิตสูง รวมถึงมีพฤติกรรมก้าวร้าว ขาดสมาธิ ควบคุมอารมณ์ตัวเองไม่ค่อยได้ และไม่เป็นมิตร

ดร.ดันน์กล่าวว่า “ในวงการวิทยาศาสตร์ การระบุปัญหาสุขภาพจิตจากการวิเคราะห์ฟันถือเป็นเรื่องน่าแปลกใจและไม่มีใครคาดถึง เพราะทางจิตเวชให้ความสำคัญเรื่องสุขภาพฟันน้อยมาก การวิจัยนี้จึงเป็นเรื่องใหม่มากสำหรับนักวิจัยด้านสุขภาพจิต”

ฟันคือเครื่องบันทึกข้อมูลที่ทำให้ทราบว่าเด็กๆ ถูกเลี้ยงดูอย่างไร ได้กินอาหารแบบไหน และมีระดับความเครียดอยู่ที่เท่าไร โดยนักวิจัยเลือกวิเคราะห์จากฟันหน้าที่เริ่มพัฒนาตั้งแต่อยู่ในท้องแม่ โดยเด็กนักเรียนวัยประถมชาวอังกฤษ 1 ใน 10 คน พบว่ามีความผิดปรกติด้านจิตใจอย่างน้อย 1 อย่าง และจะเพิ่มจำนวนเป็น 1 ใน 7 คน เมื่อเข้าวัยมัธยม และเป็น 1 ใน 6 คนเมื่อเข้าเรียนวิทยาลัย ข้อมูลนี้ได้รับการนำเสนอในงานประชุมประจำปีของสมาคมเพื่อความก้าวหน้าทางวิทยาศาสตร์อเมริกัน (the American Association for the Advancement of Science) ที่เมืองวอร์ชิงตัน ดี.ซี.
