AIT through its Faculty of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources (FFANR) continues to lead impactful research addressing real-world challenges in marginalized communities.

In the highlands of northern Thailand, where monocropping of maize and rubber has long dominated, farmers face declining soil health, environmental degradation, and increasing climate risks. A recent study by NRM/FFANR PhD graduate Nitchakan Inkong (Mean) offers practical pathways toward more sustainable and resilient farming systems.

Her research explores how farmers perceive climate change, what challenges they face, and what drives their willingness to adopt climate-smart agriculture (CSA) solutions such as biochar application, solar-powered irrigation, and diversified cropping systems. Importantly, the study also evaluates whether these alternatives are economically viable for smallholder farmers.
