“เสือดาวในภาพวาด ดีหรือร้าย?”

เด็กสาวนอนอยู่บนเตียงขนาดใหญ่ในห้องที่ดูเก่าและหรูหรา ขณะที่เสือดาวตัวใหญ่โน้มตัวอยู่เหนือเธอ และใช้ลิ้นเลียศีรษะของเธออย่างอ่อนโยน ภาพจึงทำให้เราเกิดคำถามทันทีว่า สัตว์ตัวนี้กำลังดูแลเธอ…หรือกำลังมองเธอเป็นเหยื่อกันแน่?

นี่คือหัวใจสำคัญของผลงานของ Guillermo Lorca ศิลปินชาวชิลี ผู้มักนำเด็ก สัตว์ป่า ความฝัน และบรรยากาศแบบเทพนิยายมาผสมกัน เขาสนใจช่วงเวลาที่ความงามอยู่ใกล้กับความอันตราย ความอ่อนโยนอยู่ใกล้กับความรุนแรง และเราไม่สามารถตัดสินได้ชัดเจนว่าสิ่งที่เห็นนั้นปลอดภัยหรือน่ากลัว

สำหรับ The English Bed เขาให้คำอธิบายที่ชัดเจนขึ้นในปี 2026 ว่า สิ่งที่ทำให้ภาพนี้ได้ผลคือ “ความตึงเครียดระหว่างองค์ประกอบต่างๆ” โดยเราไม่รู้แน่ชัดว่าเสือดาวกำลังจะกินเหยื่อของมัน หรือกำลังปกป้องเด็กสาวอยู่ ความไม่แน่นอนนี้คือสิ่งที่ศิลปินตั้งใจสร้างขึ้น

อาจกล่าวได้ว่า The English Bed ไม่ได้ถามเราว่า
“เสือดาวในภาพวาด ดีหรือร้าย?”

แต่มันกำลังถามว่า…

“ถ้าความอันตรายเข้ามาหาเราในรูปลักษณ์ที่อ่อนโยน เราจะยังมองเห็นมันอยู่หรือไม่?”

หรือในอีกมุมหนึ่ง—

“สิ่งที่ดูน่ากลัว อาจกำลังปกป้องเราอยู่ก็ได้หรือเปล่า?”

นั่นคือเหตุผลที่ภาพนี้ทั้งสวยงามและน่ากังวลในเวลาเดียวกัน และทำให้เราหยุดมองมันไม่ได้ง่ายๆ

A young girl lies on a large, elegant bed while an enormous leopard bends over her and gently licks her head. The scene immediately raises a disturbing question:

Is the animal protecting her…or is she its prey?

This ambiguity lies at the heart of Guillermo Lorca’s work. The Chilean artist often brings together children, wild animals, dreams, and fairy-tale-like environments. His paintings exist in a space where beauty meets danger, tenderness meets violence, and safety can never be completely separated from threat.

Importantly, Lorca does not want the animals in his paintings to have one fixed symbolic meaning. He has described them as representing different inner drives or unconscious forces, while deliberately leaving the symbols open enough for viewers to create their own interpretations.

In a 2026 interview, Lorca spoke more specifically about The English Bed. He explained that the painting works through the tension and ambiguity between its elements: we cannot be sure whether the animal is about to devour its prey or whether it is protecting her.

The leopard therefore carries two opposite possibilities at the same time. It is powerful, wild, and capable of killing, yet its gesture is strangely gentle—almost like a mother cat grooming its young.

The girl makes the scene even more mysterious. She does not appear terrified or desperate to escape. Instead, she seems remarkably calm, as though the presence of this dangerous animal is somehow normal to her.

Some viewers interpret the painting through ideas of predation, vulnerability, control, or grooming. These readings can be interesting, but they should be presented as interpretations rather than the artist’s official explanation. Lorca himself repeatedly emphasizes that his paintings can support several meanings at once.

Perhaps The English Bed is therefore not asking:

“Is the leopard good or evil?”

Instead, it may be asking something more uncomfortable:

“What if danger approaches us looking gentle?”

Or perhaps the opposite:

“What if the creature we fear is actually protecting us?”

That uncertainty is what makes the painting so memorable. It is beautiful and frightening at the same time—and the more we look at it, the less certain we become about what is really happening.

But the more I look at him, the sweeter and friendlier this version seems. 😆

จนเดวิดต้นฉบับอาจต้องถามว่า…
The original David might even ask…

“Why do I suddenly look so sweet?”
“ทำไมจู่ๆ ฉันดูหน้าหวานขึ้นมานะ?”

An old memory from 2023, when I visited Ming Liu Gallery in Singapore.

ในบรรดาภาพทั้งหมด ใหม่ชอบภาพไก่สีขาวมากที่สุด 🐓
Of all the artworks, I was most drawn to this group of white chickens. 🐓

อาจเป็นเพราะใหม่เกิดปีระกา จึงรู้สึกเชื่อมโยงกับภาพนี้เป็นพิเศษ
Perhaps it felt more personal because I was born in the Year of the Rooster.

ภาพนี้มีชื่อว่า Unexpected Company ผลงานของศิลปิน Yu Chunming เป็นศิลปินร่วมสมัยเชื้อสายจีน–อเมริกัน
The painting is titled Unexpected Company by artist Yu Chunming (余春明), a Chinese-American contemporary artist.

ว่าแล้วก็คิดว่าน่าจะลองวาดภาพไก่ของตัวเองดูบ้าง เพราะใหม่ยังไม่เคยวาดไก่เลย😆
It made me think that perhaps I should paint my own rooster or chicken one day, because I have never painted one before.

บางครั้ง ภาพที่เราเห็นเพียงไม่กี่นาที อาจทิ้งแรงบันดาลใจไว้กับเราได้นานหลายปี
Sometimes, an artwork we see for only a few minutes can leave us inspired for many years.
