Some people think that “studying is boring” as they've probably experienced boring, one-way lectures in a traditional classroom environment. But for the Senior Executive Program (SEP-33), we've revolutionized the learning experience so that it's not just a lecture-based format! And our participants were thrilled by this new approach to make “learning fun and relevant”.

On August 6-7, 2019, Yeo Teow Chong (TC) and Lina Koh from the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) conducted a “Building Capacity In Your Organization” session for the SEP-33 participants. Both of the instructors led the session in various engaging ways such as using games, interactive competitions, and role playing. The class turned out to be fun, engaging and very interactive!

As SEP-33 promised double certificates, the participants received their first certificate from CCL on August 7th. CCL has been ranked in the Top-10 globally in executive education by the Financial Times for 16 years. Congratulations to all of the participants on completely this portion of the program! Another certificate from Sasin is coming soon.

Key insights from the class were:

#1 The first step in being a great leader is to learn about your own personality (e.g. using Workplace Big Five, FIRO-B) and your own strengths;
#2 People have many types of personality. In order to influence your team effectively, don’t be a one-trick pony. Learn to influence different people with different approaches.
#3 Great leaders need to think about many perspectives. Don’t focus all of your attention only on your job or your function. Look at the overall picture.

In the past, the roles of women in many cultures have been limited to wife and mother. Today, in our ever-changing and evolving world, we see many powerful women in the top positions of big corporations, and even leading their countries. And yet, the majority of leadership positions in most industries (and countries!) are still occupied by men.

Why? Do men lead teams more effectively than women?

In honor of Mother's Day, we’d like to share what we think are the top 4 strengths of female leaders to help empower all of our female followers! Here you go!

The journey of SDX Batch 1 participants has come to an end! Last week, the participants left the chaos of Bangkok for Hua Hin for their final SDX weekend. But this wasn’t a holiday trip, but something much more meaningful.

On August 2-4, 2019, SDX participants visited the community in Pa Mak, and made donations of essential items to the children and helped the villagers build restrooms. They also managed to raise over 200,000 baht to assist the development of the community.

This was such a great ending to SDX Batch1’s journey. Through the more than 3 months of the program, the participants not only learned a lot about digital transformation and made new friends, but they also brought smiles to the faces of these beautiful children.

Today, Sasin Executive Education welcomed senior executives from leading corporates in Thailand who joined our Senior Executive Program (SEP-33).

The program opened with a welcoming speech from Nick Pisalyabut, Deputy Director of Sasin School of Management, followed by a Disruption Workshop conducted by Assist. Prof. Piyachart Phiromswad, Ph.D., Director of the SEP program.

This two-week-long workshop is highly interactive. Its goal is to inspire participants to develop a growth mindset, to work with the environment in mind, and to nourish creative thinking in their workplaces.

Although this was just the first session of the SEP-33 program, the participants were clearly engaged with the class exercises and their classmates.

Sasin Executive Education will periodically post photos as well as notable teaching points from our world-renowned professors. Please stay tuned!

On July 18-19, 2019, Sasin Executive Education was honored to welcome Dr. Sanjay Sharma and Dr. Pramodita Sharma from the University of Vermont, USA, to conduct the Sustainable Innovation for Family Business program for our enthusiastic participants. We’d like to share some of the key insights from the class for Sasin Executive Education’s followers!

“Why some family businesses struggle after the founder’s era, while others thrive over generations?”

Dr. Dita started with this critical question before revealing that the nature of family business is very complicated. First generation owners have power to control the companies. However, when it comes to the second and third generations, the enterprises are increasingly involved with many family members such as siblings and cousins who have diverse personalities, preferences, skills, and needs that makes the process of decision-making even more complicated.

Dr. Dita also suggested that growing the family business for future generations requires continuous development and renewal possibilities in three zones. First, the “Incremental Zone” is when the company is selling the same products in an existing market. Second, the “Adjacent Zone” is when the company is selling the same products but in new markets. Finally, the “Radical Zone” is when the company is expanding the business towards new products and markets!

Next, we moved to another question:

“What can you do if you are in a family business that is being disrupted?”

Dr. Sanjay noted that “Customers buy solutions not products”, citing the envelope as a great example. Today, fewer and fewer people use envelopes in their daily lives; however, what people get with an envelope is not just a product but a solution for “transferring a message”.

Think about your products and services. What are the solutions that customers buy? Can you provide these solutions in other platforms or business models?

Dr. Sanjay also emphasized that family businesses have to step out from the narrow lens of marketing in order to see a wider view of renewal possibilities so that they can survive and thrive in this digital era.

Sasin also invited two guest speakers for the program: Jittapa Angkhasekvilai, the Assistant Managing Director and second-generation of the founding family of General Candy, the makers of Hartbeat; and Siradej Donavanik, the Director of Development and Projects and third-generation of the founding family of Dusit International (Dusit Thani Hotels and Resorts). Participants heard from both of them that the roles and responsibilities in family business need to be clear so that the employees will not get confused. They both noted it is also very challenging to deal with the digital divide between generations, especially in today’s data-driven world. How can the third generation convince the first generation that decision-making based on data is as important as wisdom, which is experience-based. The guest speakers suggested that time, patience as well as communicating the benefits of the enterprises can help solve this issue.

Thank you to all of the participants who were part of this program. We hope you can all go back and apply these insights to your family businesses.
