Tsunami Alert for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and others. Waves expected over the next few hours, caused by 8.9 earthquake in Japan.

The Indian Navy and the Coast Guard in a joint operation on Friday, destroyed a pirate mother ship, PRANTALAY, off the Lakshadweep group of islands and arrested 15 pirates.
They also rescued 20 fishermen of Thailand and Myanmarese who were being hostage by the pirates after PRANTALAY was hijacked by them in April, 2010.

FOUR crew were killed on 13 Jan 2011 when a fire broke out aboard a G/C ship off Busan, South Korea. GRT 1,412, Cambodia register, M.V Yun Xing had eight crew from China and one from Myanmar onboard when the fire started. Four of Chinese crew died in the blaze, while the other five were rescued, AFP reported.Officials suspect the fire was caused by a short circuit, the Yonhap news agency reported.

The wordwide supply of seafarers in 2010 is estimated to be 624,000 officers and 747,000 ratings, while the curren worldwide demand for seafarers is 637,000 officers and 747,000 ratings according to BIMCO and ISF joint study of the worldwide supply and demand of seafarers. There is a 2% shortage in the supply of officers this year to cope with the higher demand.
