Inclusion is designed.”
The 8 Dimensions of Happiness in Self-Mandala
“Embracing a Learning Culture that Respects Differences”: Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University Organizes EDU PRIDE DAY: Mindful Pride to Promote Mindfulness-based Art Learning and Understanding of Diversity
On June 26, the Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University, organized EDU PRIDE DAY: Mindful Pride 2026 under the theme “Embracing a Learning Culture that Respects Differences.” The event aimed to promote an open, safe, and inclusive learning space that respects the dignity of every individual through dialogue on diversity, equity, acceptance of differences, and mindfulness-based art learning.
The event was honored by Assistant Professor Dr. Udomluk Koolsriroj, Dean of the Faculty of Education, who shared her experiences and perspectives drawn from the family institution as a foundation for acceptance, understanding, and respect for differences. She also emphasized the Faculty of Education’s commitment to serving as a learning space that provides students, staff, and participants with opportunities to learn through diverse experiences, try new approaches, and remain open to different perspectives.
Assistant Professor Dr. Udomluk further highlighted that education should not focus solely on the development of academic knowledge. Rather, it should foster a deeper understanding of humanity, respect for the dignity of others, and the ability to live constructively in a diverse society. Opening spaces for students and staff to learn through activities such as this is therefore part of cultivating future teachers and educational professionals who are open-minded, understand learners’ contexts, and are ready to create classrooms where everyone feels safe and valued.
During the event, Assistant Professor Dr. Piyanan Hirunchalothorn, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Faculty of Education, shared her views on the role of education in building a learning culture that respects differences. She emphasized that a meaningful learning space should provide learners with opportunities to encounter new experiences, experiment with ideas and actions, and learn from the differences of people around them. In contemporary society, education is not limited to the transmission of academic knowledge; it is also a process of cultivating understanding of human beings, society, and meaningful coexistence.
In particular, within the context of the Faculty of Education as an institution that contributes to teacher preparation and professional development, developing an understanding of diversity, equity, and respect for human dignity is a fundamental foundation for preparing future teachers. Teachers do not merely manage learning in classrooms; they also create safe, open, and supportive learning environments that enable learners with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, beliefs, and identities to grow.
Assistant Professor Dr. Chนนsak Ueangchokchai, Head of the Department of Vocational Education, addressed the importance of understanding “diversity” in dimensions broader than gender. He noted that diversity encompasses identities, thoughts, beliefs, age, professions, cultures, life experiences, and the social contexts of individuals. Therefore, creating a learning space that respects differences must begin with recognizing the value of humanity in all dimensions, without ranking who is better than whom or who is more deserving of acceptance.
One of the key ideas discussed during the exchange was the statement, “Inclusion is not announced. Inclusion is designed.” Reflected by Assistant Professor Dr.Dech-siri Nopas and Ajarn Chakree Kerdsomboon, this idea emphasized that genuine inclusion cannot be achieved merely through policy announcements or by asking people to open their minds. People do not change their attitudes simply because they are instructed to do so. Change becomes possible when the learning experience itself changes. In other words, learners and participants need opportunities to encounter, engage, think, reflect, and feel safe enough to learn with others.
Accordingly, the learning process of the activity focused on three key dimensions: Contact, or encountering and interacting with differences; Reflection, or thinking and making meaning from experience; and Safe, or creating psychological safety so that participants can open themselves to new perspectives, learn from others, and gently reflect on their own understanding.
In addition, the activity was designed through a collaboration between Mindfulness Community x Communication Expert, using Mindfulness-based Art Activity as a learning process that connects mindfulness practice, emotional awareness, and creative art-making with issues of diversity, equity, and coexistence with understanding.
A key component of the event was the WORKSHOP: Mindful Pride: Nature Mandala, led by Dr.Walainart Meepan, Sound Bath Healer, and Dr. Sirapob Kaewmak, Facilitator. Participants learned through arranging natural materials such as leaves, flowers, branches, stones, and other natural elements into Mandala artworks that reflected the meanings of diversity, imperfection, individual beauty, and harmonious coexistence within a shared space.
The Nature Mandala activity encouraged participants to consider happiness and balance in multiple dimensions, including the physical, emotional, relational, contextual, intellectual, nutritional, spiritual, and sensory dimensions. This aligned with the concept of The 8 Dimensions of Happiness in Self-Mandala, which views happiness not as a single or fixed form, but as something that emerges through awareness, acceptance, and care for oneself in all dimensions of life.
At the end of the activity, Dr. Sirapob Kaewmak guided participants in reflecting on the key message presented in the closing slide, which captured the heart of the event:
“Gender, expression, skin color,
nationality, social class, education,
age, profession, and belief
do not determine who is better than whom.”
This message served as an important conclusion to the Mindful Pride activity, reminding participants that differences should not be used as criteria for judging human worth. Rather, they should be a starting point for learning, listening, and living together with respect.
The EDU PRIDE DAY: Mindful Pride event marks another important step for the Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University, in promoting an open learning culture that respects differences and in designing learning experiences that allow everyone to feel genuinely included in the educational community.
The Department of Vocational Education, Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University, together with the Faculty of Education, the Office of Corporate Communications and Special Affairs, and the Creative Arts, Cheerleading, and Performing Arts Student Club, jointly reaffirm their commitment to driving forward learning spaces that are open, respectful of differences, and supportive of coexistence with understanding.
