CATIONIC AMINO ACID TRANSPORTER1 (CsCAT1) was identified as a key regulator of theanine distribution in tea plants. CsCAT1 transports theanine and affects its allocation between stems and leaves. Repressing CsCAT1 increases theanine content in young leaves, making it a potential target for improving tea quality.
