A Second Message from the President of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association (IPPA)

Dear Esteem colleagues,

Greetings from Thailand. This is the first message after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. These couple years, our lives, research, and teaching were full of difficulties, frustrations, and obstacles. Our local and international committees have worked very hard to ensure that this meeting can continue as planned in 2022. Over the past two years, we make sure that we have a secure funding for our congress with the great supports from Faculty of Archaeology, Silpakorn University and the other Institutional partners including The Royal Thai Fine Arts Department, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre (Public Orgnaization), Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization), Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Arts, Social Research Institute, Chiang Mai University, ICOMOS International Committee on Archaeological Management, and Faculty of Archaeology, Silpakorn University Alumni Association. In addition, we have many volunteers to help with the different tasks. Without them, this congress would not be possible. I thank them all.

At this Congress, we cover a wide range of topics including new discoveries in the Indo-Pacific region from the modern human dispersal to the socio-cultural issues in contemporary society involving gender, collaborative research, indigenous and local communities. These presented research also indicate the progress of Indo-Pacific archaeology through the diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches. Indeed, our research can put our regional in the world context.

Up to now, although the economic crisis and health situation are evenly not good within our region. I am delighted to see that we have also received attendance from fellow members who will come to present at this congress. We have a total of 60 sessions with over 550 people from 48 countries.

However, I am deeply saddened by the news that many colleagues cannot attend; especially, from Myanmar and China due to the civil conflict and the domestic Covid-19 regulation, respectively. We definitely miss them.

What’s new this year? There are many awards including a Student Poster Prize, a Professional Archaeologist Poster Prize and a Presentation Prize. We hope these awards are a blessing and encouragement to our fellow members for their hard and good works. In addition, we have held a few workshops to enhance research skills before and after the meeting. To the end, we organize the excursions to archaeological sites in Thailand which you can choose according to your interests. Please don’t forget to sign up ahead of time!!!

We also have an opportunity to bring you to join our Loy Krathong tradition in Chiang Mai where is a famous province for this event!!! Loy Krathong is a common ritual of Southeast Asia to thank the goddess of the water on the full moon night. We can pray for blessing and asking for bad things to pass by our lives in order to start over. We believe this ceremony is a perfect fit for our meeting. We are expecting to go back to work in the fields after missing three years during the Covid-19.

It is time to be joyful. We look forward to meeting you all in November and let’s strengthen our Indo-Pacific archaeological community and make the impact for the future together!!!.

A one-and-a-half-day international online conference and workshop on lithic analysis will be held on 27-28 June 2022 via ZOOM MEETING, collaboratively organized by the Faculty of Archaeology, Silpakorn University, the Thai-French Paleosurvey, the France Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, the Archaeological Institute for Yangtze Civilization and School of History, Wuhan University.

This online workshop will present the progress report on the Thai-French Palaeosurvey collaborative research project, the recent study on Hoabinhian technocomplex in Southwest China, and the basic lithic analysis practices.

Next week, we will email the participants who completed all three weekly quizzes, composed of an evaluation form of the project and a personal information form for an E-certificate.

Primarily, SAFS souvenirs will provide to all Thai and international participants who have done all quizzes and also have addresses in Thailand. We want to say sorry to the oversea participants that we cannot send these souvenirs due to the cost of international postal.

However, we will provide it directly to some international participants who have a plan to visit Chiang Mai for the IPPA2022 conference will be held during 6-12 November 2022, as detailed in https://www.ippasecretariat.org/22nd-ippa-congress and https://ippa2022.sac.or.th/index.php For this option, please check the box in the form that the course will email next week.

Briefly, this week we have six lecture videos that talk about how to manage archaeological data and how to share your research’s results in academic journals, including the various fieldwork experiences shared by the archaeologists from the Department of Archaeology Silpakorn University and the Fine Arts Department.

We would like to thank our invited lecturers sincerely; Sittisak Rungcharoensuksri and Tanongsak Lerdpipadworakul from the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre, Dr. Noel Hidalgo Tan from SEAMEO SPAFA, Theerasak Thanusilp from the Office of Archaeology, and Sarat Chalawsuntisakul from the 11th Regional Office of Fine Arts Department, Songkhla for their beneficial videos.

SAFS videos on the 2nd week are uploading to your classroom today. The lectures and demonstration videos introduce excavation and field techniques, soil profiles, and stratigraphy, including the principle of artefact preservation and inventory, how archaeologists primarily classified their potsherd, and interpretation to lifeways of past populations on the ceramics and bones evidence.

For this week, our department would like to thank Professor Dr. Philip Piper sincerely, invited lecturer from the Australian National University, for very formative lectures on soil profile and zooarchaeology.

Also, thank Nong Ratchawat archaeological site, Wat Phu Noi, the 2nd Regional Office of Fine Arts, Suphanburi, and the 4th Regional Office of Fine Arts, Lopburi for their permission to film all demonstration videos.

The second quiz will upload tomorrow. Also, there are a few unfinished videos that will upload later.
