For starters, resources are scarce. Don't expect the latest textbooks or audio equipment - we're talking chalkboards and stubby chalk. Just getting through the overflowing curriculum is a challenge when half the class lacks pencils or paper. My lesson plans need major adjusting according to what materials we actually have on hand that day.

In addition, the language barrier leads to bumpy days. My Lao is mediocre at best, so communication mishaps often happen. I've learned creative mime routines to convey what I mean. But frantically acting out vocabulary words like "hypotenuse" rarely goes smoothly.

The infrastructure also leaves much to be desired. Scrolling PowerPoint slides aren't an option when the electricity cuts out randomly. Monsoon season brings leaky roofs and flooding, meaning class gets cancelled frequently. I've learned to always have a backup plan that doesn't require technology or dry classrooms.

Of course, the students make it all worthwhile. Their enthusiasm and gratitude for any bit of English knowledge I can impart melts my frustration away. My lesson plans have gone from lofty literature discussions to practical conversational English, and the students beam with pride when they master a new phrase.

Teaching English in Laos has tested my resourcefulness and my patience daily. My notions of shaping young academic minds have been replaced with the goal of just providing basic lessons to eager students. - My students' enthusiasm never fails to impress me. Even after long days working in rice fields or factories, they still come to class excited to learn. Their dedication motivates me to be a better teacher.

- The school schedule here matches the tropical climate perfectly. Shorts and flip flops are the unofficial uniform. Classes are held early in the morning and late afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day.

- My commute consists of a quick motorbike ride through lush green landscapes. It sure beats braving the dreary commute on the London Underground.

- Cambodian cuisine is incredible! I thought I knew spicy food back home, but khmer curries kick things up a notch. My favorite local delicacy is fish amok, a creamy coconut curry made with fresh snakehead fish.

And the tonal complexities tied my tongue in knots. Hand gestures and smiles became my primary means of communication.

As an entry-level teacher, my starting salary of $1500 USD per month provided a decent living by local standards. I was able to afford a comfortable apartment, travel within the country, and enjoy the incredible street food. However, luxuries like frequent trips abroad or owning a vehicle were out of reach on my income alone.
