🇺🇸In English, when we mention the quantity of something — for example, “one bowl” — we usually say the number followed by the object (noun).
🇹🇭In Thai, it’s a little different. To express the quantity of things, we say the object (noun) first, followed by the number and a specific classifier word.

For example:
- English: 1 bowl 🥣
- Thai: Bowl is tûuay and the classifier for a bowl is bai, so “one bowl” becomes tûuay 1 bai.

Some objects share the same classifier. For instance, bai can be used for plates, glasses, bowls, hats, or paper.
For objects that come in pairs — like a spoon & fork, chopsticks, shoes, or socks — the classifier is kôo.

Confirmed from my students:
Remembering each classifier for certain objects — and arranging them into sentences — can sometimes be confusing when speaking Thai.
For example, in English you say:
“1 shoe” But in Thai, we say: “shoes + 1 + classifier word (คู่ / kôo)”

To help my students get used to the sentence structure and vocabulary, I turned the lesson into a small game. We used a deck of 50 cards, each showing a number and a picture of clothing. On each turn, every player draws one card. The number on the card becomes both the quantity of the object and the score for that round.

When you draw a card, you must describe it by saying the quantity and item correctly in Thai structure. For instance, if you draw a card with the number 5 and a picture of a shirt, you need to say “เสื้อ 5 ตัว (sêuua 5 dtuua)” (5 shirts) in Thai.

To make it more challenging and fun, the first person to reach 40 points wins.

Trust me — I’ve never won this game.

In Thai, there are many things to remember—different vowels, consonants, and the rules for combining them. But once it clicks, it all comes together beautifully.

I’ve been working with a 7-year-old student on reading and writing. He already knows all 44 Thai consonants. Our next step has been learning vowels. We’ve made great progress through many of them, but then we hit a tricky group:
เ-, เ-ะ, แ-, แ-ะ
They look alike and sound slightly different—easy to confuse, hard to master.

We spent a few weeks focusing just on these four vowels. When things are so similar, I want to be sure the student truly understands and remembers each one clearly.

To help, I used a variety of techniques—reading practice, color coding, using characters to represent each sound, listening and writing activities, and even games where the vowels were mixed up and the student had to fix them. Most importantly, his mom played a big role. She gave helpful feedback and supported him with his homework and revision every step of the way.

And now?
He can tell the difference confidently—and everything is finally flowing!

This practical Thai dictionary is inspired by one of my lessons.
🍊 At a fruit trolley – The selection depends on the seller. Some fruits — like mango, pineapple , guava , and dragon fruit — are usually cut into pieces for convenience. But if you’d prefer them left whole, just let the seller know.
😋 Sweet or sour? – Mango and pineapple can be either deliciously sweet or mouth-puckeringly sour. I usually ask the seller first before buying.
🌶️ Spicy-salty Thai fruit dip – Each shop has its own recipe, but most blends are salty, sweet, and spicy. If you prefer no heat, you can ask for the sweet & salty version instead.

In the picture, a lady intended to order a burnt grilled chicken, but the seller misunderstood and thought she wanted a not burnt chicken.

Why does this happen?

"ไม่ (mâi)"=(not) and "ไหม้ (mâi)"=(burnt) are words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings.

If you order something and say "ao mâi mâi", the phrase could be ambiguous. The listener might interpret it as:
-You don’t want it burnt.
-You want it burnt.

To ensure clear communication (so both the speaker and listener understand each other), we can rephrase sentences to avoid confusion.

For example:
-I don’t want it burnt: ไม่เอาไหม้ (mâi ao mâi )
-I want it quite burnt: เอาไหม้เกรียม (ao mâi mâi griiam griiam)

Note:
Adding the word “griiam” (เกรียม) helps clarify that you want something noticeably burnt, typically turning dark brown. This can make your request more precise.

Fun with Daily Routines and Telling Time 🕦🤗👾


After discussing daily routines, we divided the students into two teams for an exciting game! Each team took turns playing rock-paper-scissors. If a student won, they got to move their pawn to the next level on the board and pronounce the time in Thai.

The game was full of energy, laughter, and learning, helping everyone practice telling time in a fun and competitive way!

The Final Day: Learning to Tell Time in Thai ⏳🔔🕓

On the last day of the program, we focused on learning how to tell time in Thai the way locals typically do. After the teacher introduced seven common time patterns, we put those structures into practice through a fun activity.

Each student received seven cards, with each color representing a different daily activity. Their task was to read scripts describing specific times and match the correct number to the corresponding activity.

It was a creative and interactive way to wrap up the program, leaving the students confident and ready to use their new Thai language skills!
