4 Difficulties for Foreigners in Studying Thai Language 🇹🇭📚
1. Thai Language is TONAL 📢
There are 5 tones : the mid tone, low tone, falling tone, high tone and rising tone. The meaning of words varies widely depending on which tone is used. If you pronounce tones in the wrong way, probably you will not be understood.
2. How to DIFFERENTIATE between certain consonants. 🤷♀️❓
Thai language has consonants for the sounds (in English). For example;
- บ.ใบไม้ (Bor-Bai-Mái) that has a ‘B’ sound
- ป.ปลา (Bpor-Bplaa) which gives us a ‘Bp’ sound
In English it is hardly necessary to differentiate between these consonants to be understood.
3. WRITING Sentences ✍️📖
Besides from memorizing 44 consonants and 28 vowels, the words in a sentence are all linked together, so it might be difficult to recognize immediately where a word ends, and the next word begins.
4. LISTENING COMPREHENSION 👂👤
Listening is a common problem for every language learner faces, whether you studying Thai or other languages. Speaking with the Native Speaker is the best way to boost up your language skill. Even though you’ve known core vocabulary and grammar, there’s still challenging for Foreigners to speak naturally.
