“Industry Policy, Import Tariffs, and Global Imbalances”

🔵 KEY POINTS
🔹 Global imbalances are mainly caused by difference between saving and investment in each country, rather than simply being the result of direct trade between countries.

🔹 Industrial policy and import tariffs are often ineffective tools for solving trade balance problems because they do not modify savings-investment habits that create these imbalances.

🔹 A current account surplus is not an indicator of economic success. Instead, it may reflect too little domestic investment, as was the case with Thailand in the past.

🔹 Thailand’s key challenge is to transform excess savings into investments that increase productivity and the country’s competitiveness, rather than focusing on creating trade surpluses.

ความไม่สมดุลของโลกเกิดจากส่วนต่างการออมและการลงทุนของแต่ละประเทศ มากกว่าการค้าโดยตรง ดุลบัญชีเดินสะพัดจึงสะท้อนโครงสร้างเศรษฐกิจเชิงลึก ไม่ใช่เพียงการค้า

นโยบายอุตสาหกรรมและภาษีนำเข้า มักไม่เปลี่ยนพฤติกรรมการออม-ลงทุนอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ จึงมีผลจำกัดต่อดุลการค้าในเชิงโครงสร้าง การเกินดุลบัญชีเดินสะพัดไม่ใช่ตัวชี้วัดความสำเร็จเสมอไป แต่อาจสะท้อนระดับการลงทุนภายในประเทศที่แตกต่างกันในแต่ละช่วงเวลา

Potluck Cultural Exchange #3 – A Taste of Vietnam

The Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University, hosted the 3rd Potluck Cultural Exchange event to promote cultural exchange among graduate students on May 7, 2026.

The event was honored by Assoc. Prof. Danupon Ariyasajjakorn, Ph.D., Associate Dean, who delivered the opening remarks and welcomed graduate students. During the event, students presented Vietnamese and Thai dishes, sharing information about the ingredients and demonstrating cooking methods, fostering mutual learning and cultural exchange.
