In April of every year, Thailand, along with other Buddhist countries, gets ready to celebrate the anniversary of a new year according to the traditional Buddhist calendar. But more than a religious holiday, it is also a cultural one.
For this year, the Songkran goddess is the 7th devi, Mahothorndevi, the deity of Saturn with her vahana peacock, here to bless earth with a rain-full year.
A festival of joy, respect, communities, and water, at the peak of Southeast Asian summer, Songkran is Thailand’s biggest holiday. Those participating in the celebration can be expected to sprinkle water onto Buddha image; go to the temples to pray, build sand pagodas, water their elders for well wishes, paint their face with cooling chalk cream, witness the Miss Songkran pageants, as well as embrace the floral water splashing activities signature to Thailand.
As PGS Student Council, it is our wish to all that this Songkran will be one of fruitful reunions, fun, and individual happiness.
