สับสน ….แก้ได้.
Using apostrophes in the wrong way is one of the most common punctuation errors for native speakers of English as well as for learners.
#ปัญหาการใช้ apostrophes นั้นไม่ได้มีในเฉพาะคนที่เรียนภาษาอังกฤษเท่านั้น แม้แต่คนที่เป็นเจ้าของภาษาเองก็ยังสบสนได้

If you remember these three simple rules, you will avoid mistakes:
#มีกฎ 3 ข้อที่คุณจะไม่ผิดพลาด

1) We use apostrophes to show who something belongs to, e.g. This is Tom’s hat.
#เราจะใช้ อะโพสโตรฟี่เอสเพื่อบอกว่าใครเป็นเจ้าของ เช่น หมวกของทอม Tom’s hat.

2) We also use them for contracted forms, to show that something is missing, e.g. It’s raining.
#เราจะใช้ อะโพสโตรฟี่เอสในการย่อรูปแบบการเขียนให้สั้นลง เช่น ฝนกำลังตก ย่อ is เหลือ ‘s เป็น It’s raining.

3) We do not use them for plurals!! If you are in an English-speaking country, you will see many signs in shops and cafés advertising ‘tomato’s’, ‘pizza’s’, ‘sandwich’s’, etc. This is incorrect, and you will lose marks if you do this in an English exam!
#เราจะไม่ใช้ อะโพสโตรฟี่เอสในลักษณะพหูพจน์ เช่น ‘tomato’s’, ‘pizza’s’, ‘sandwich’s’.
These are the main rules to remember, but here is a little more detail:
ยังมีรายละเอียดเล็กๆน้อยอีกหน่อยที่เราจะต้องระวังการใช้ดังนี้

We usually add ’s to singular words to show who or what something belongs to: my mum’s car, the dog’s tail, Harry’s school.
#เราสามารถใช้ อะโพสโตรฟี่เอสกับคำเดี่ยวๆเพื่อบอกว่าสิ่งของนั้นเป็นของใคร เช่น My mum’s car.

We also add ’s to plural words that don’t end in ‘s’: women’s books, people’s opinions.
#เรายังสามารถใช้ อะโพสโตรฟี่เอสกับคำพหูพจน์ที่ไม่ลงท้ายด้วย S เช่น women’s books, people’s opinions

For plurals that do end in ‘s’, we simply put an apostrophe at the end of the word: the animals’ owner, my parents’ house.
#เรายังสามารถใช้ อะโพสโตรฟี่เอสเติมด้านหลังคำที่เป็นพหูพจน์และลงท้ายด้วย S เช่น the animals’ owner, my parents’ house.

For singular words ending in ‘s’, you can add either ’s or – for more formal writing – just the apostrophe: Tess’s phone number, Ben Holmes’s friend, Dickens’ novels.
#เรายังสามารถใช้ อะโพสโตรฟี่เอสเติมด้านหลังคำเฉพาะเดี่ยวๆที่ลงท้ายด้วย S ทั้งสองแบบ คือ เติม ‘s และ ‘ ตัวเดียวเลย เช่น Tess’s phone number, Ben Holmes’s friend, Dickens’ novels.

We often use apostrophes at the end of the names of jobs when we are talking about the place where they work: go to the doctor’s, the greengrocer’s.
#เรายังสามารถใช้ อะโพสโตรฟี่เอสเติมหลังคำที่เป็นสถานที่ทำงานที่คนเหล่านั้นทำงานอยู่เพื่อย่อคำ ดังนี้ go to the doctor’s, the greengrocer’s. คำเต็มๆคือ go to the doctor’s office, the greengrocer’s shop.

Do help yourself! (The language of party food)-บริการตัวเอง
มาเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับคำศัพท์เกี่ยวกับอาหารในงานเลี้ยงกันครับ.
The Christmas season is once again here and around the world, people who celebrate this festival are going to parties and gatherings with family, friends and colleagues. One important feature of most gatherings is food so we thought we’d take a look at the language in this area.

When you are # (=organizing in your home) a get-together of any type, you have to make decisions about catering (=providing food). How much and what type of food will you offer your guests? You might plan a proper dinner for people. This is sometimes called a meal, meaning that it is the sort of meal that people eat while sitting at a table: a sit-down meal at a wedding A meal in someone’s house in the evening used to be called a dinner party, though this now sounds a little formal. Nowadays, most people talk about having or asking their friends round/over for dinner: I thought I’d ask Jamie and Luisa round for dinner.

having หรือ asking round/over for dinner
เช่น I thought I’d ask Jamie and Luisa round for dinner.

ผมคิดว่าผมจะชวน Jamie และ Luisa ไปทานมื้อเย็นกัน

Bigger parties rarely feature sit-down meals but instead provide the sort of food that people can help themselves to ( get themselves), often while standing. This might be a , a meal where people choose what they want from various dishes on a table: I helped myself to a plateful of food from the buffet. A buffet might include the sort of food that can be eaten without using knives, forks or spoons. This is sometimes called finger food.

I helped myself to a plateful of food from the buffet.
ผมบริการตัวเองตักอาหารจาก buffet

At some parties, trays of are taken to the guests. Canapés are small items of food, usually with a pastry or bread base and a topping of cheese, fish etc. At many parties, bowls of crisps and nuts, etc. are placed around the room for guests to pick at ( eat small amounts of). In UK English, we sometimes refer informally to such food as nibbles: I thought we’d provide nibbles rather than a full buffet.

I thought we’d provide nibbles rather than a full buffet.
ผมคิดว่าเราควรจัดอาหารแบบหยิบกินแทนที่จะจัดอาหารแบบ buffet เต็มรูปแบบ

Sometimes ( cold sauces) are offered that people dip items of food into, such as (UK) crisps/(US) chips: chips and dips
บางครั้ง dips (ซอสเย็น) จะมีวางให้แขกไว้จิ้มมันแผ่น

Small pieces of raw vegetables for dipping in this way are sometimes referred to as .

ผักดิบที่หั่นเป็นชิ้นเล็กๆใช้จิ้มซอสเรียกว่า (ครูดิเทส์)

A different approach to catering is to ask guests to bring dishes with them: Alice has asked me to bring a dessert. A US term for this (that is now sometimes heard in UK English) is . If you have a pot luck, all the guests bring a different dish that is then shared with the other guests: We’re having a pot luck on Saturday.

ยังมีงานเลี้ยงที่แตกต่างออกไปอีก ที่ให้แขกแต่ละคนเตรียมอาหารมาเองแล้วเอามาแชร์กันบนโต๊ะเรียกว่า pot luck
ยังแปลว่า อาหารที่มีในตอนนั้น เลือกไม่ได้

We hope this post hasn’t made you feel too hungry!

Words and phrases for talking about old age

The dinner party included several octogenarian men.
ในงานเลี้ยงอาหารเย็นมีวัย 80-89 เข้าร่วมมากมาย

She was a nonagenarian when she found fame.

She cares for her elderly mother.
เธอดูแลห่วงใยคุณแม่ผู้สูงวัยของเธอ

ส่วนคำที่ใช้ในทางการแพทย์คือ geriatric ซึ่งแปลว่า คนแก่ชรา ผู้สูงวัย เช่น

He works in the geriatric unit.
เขาทำงานในส่วนที่เป็นผู้สูงวัย

และบางครั้งก็ยังใช้คำนี้ในทางดูแคลนบอกลักษณะว่าทั้งแก่และอ่อนแอมากๆ เช่น

The company is run by a group of geriatric idiots.
บริษัทนี้ดำเนินการโดยกลุ่มคนแก่โง่เง่า (แรงส์)

หากจะให้เป็นทางการขึ้นมาหน่อย เราจะใช้คำว่า senior citizens ใน US ใช้เพียง seniors เช่น

Some companies offer discounts to senior citizens.

She went for her appointment on the wrong day – I think she was having a senior moment.

I’m getting a bit long in the tooth to go back to school.

He looked like a man with one foot in the grave.
ชายคนนั้นดูแก่ใกล้แง้มฝาโลงแล้วล่ะ ไม่รอดแน่

ยังไม่จบ เรายังมีคำที่ดูดีไม่ทับถมกันมากไปในการเรียนคนแก่ๆให้ท่านได้นำไปใช้อีก คือ คำว่า spry(adj) หรือ sprightly(adj) แปลว่า คนแก่ที่ดูมีพลัง มีสุขภาพดี เช่นตัวอย่าง

She is a sprightly 94-year-old.
เธอเป็นหญิงสูงวัยที่มีพลังและสุขภาพดีมาก

และยังมีวลีที่ใช้ในการชมคนแก่ที่ยังดูดีมีพลังสามารถทำอะไรๆได้เหมือนคนหนุ่มสาว คือคำว่า at the grand/ripe old age of (number of age) ซึ่งแปลว่า ในอายุมากถึง.. เช่น

He’s still swimming in the sea at the grand old age of 89.
เขายังคงสามารถว่ายน้ำในทะเลได้เหมือนวัยหนุ่มสาวแม้จะย่างเข้า 89 ปีแล้วก็ตาม

Nowadays however, most people consider 70 the beginning of old age. This is probably why although the word sexagenarian (person from 60-69) exists, we rarely use it – being in your sixties is nothing remarkable. However, the slightly formal terms septuagenarian (70-79), octogenarian (80-89), nonagenarian (90-99) and centenarian (100 or over) are used both as adjectives and nouns: The dinner party included several octogenarian men. She was a nonagenarian when she found fame.

They say that growing old isn’t so bad when you consider the alternative, but old age is still a sensitive topic for many people, which is why although we may talk about ‘old people’ or ‘an old man’ privately, we would rarely use such blunt words in public or directly to the person in question. The most common, softer synonym is elderly: She cares for her elderly mother. In medical contexts, the word geriatric is used: He works in the geriatric unit. ‘Geriatric’ is also sometimes used as a derogatory word for someone who is too old and weak: The company is run by a group of geriatric idiots.

Slightly formally, we sometimes refer to elderly people as senior citizens (in US English also just seniors): Some companies offer discounts to senior citizens. This is a respectful term, but the phrase be having a senior moment is a humorous way of saying that someone has done something foolish such as forgetting something or becoming confused: She went for her appointment on the wrong day – I think she was having a senior moment.

The humorous phrase a bit long in the tooth means that someone is old, usually in the context of being too old to change their ideas or do something new: I’m getting a bit long in the tooth to go back to school. More cruelly, we could talk about someone having one foot in the grave, meaning that they are close to death: He looked like a man with one foot in the grave.

There are also some positive words associated with old age. We talk about old people being spry or sprightly, meaning that they are healthy and energetic: She is a sprightly 94-year-old. We also talk about people doing things at the grand/ripe old age of (number), meaning that we are impressed that they are still able to do whatever it is: He’s still swimming in the sea at the grand old age of 89.

In my next post I will look at a closely related area: words for people or things that are old-fashioned or past their best.
