Guest Editorial:
Next-Generation Geospatial Intelligence: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Geomatics

It is a privilege to present this special issue entitled “Next-Generation Geospatial Intelligence: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Geomatics,” which highlights the dynamic convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and geospatial technologies. This intersection is rapidly reshaping the way spatial data are acquired, analysed, and transformed into actionable intelligence, unlocking new possibilities for automation, scalability, and decision support.

The articles featured in this special issue showcase the transformative integration of AI across a broad spectrum of geospatial applications. From smart infrastructure modelling and environmental monitoring to flood risk assessment and the characterisation of underground utilities, the contributions collectively reflect a shared vision: to make geospatial data more intelligent, efficient, and impactful. These studies demonstrate how the fusion of conventional geomatics methodologies with AI-driven approaches can enhance analytical capability, support near real-time processing, and enable scalable, data-driven solutions.

Several contributions highlight the role of AI in enriching data derived from UAV imagery, laser scanning, and multispectral sensors, while others explore machine learning techniques for extracting meaningful patterns from complex geodetic datasets, with applications in hydrography and land deformation analysis. Notably, some papers extend the frontiers of digital twin development through the integration of geospatial data, building information modelling (BIM), policy frameworks, and AI to support smarter urban planning and facility management. The issue also addresses the evolving role of national geospatial infrastructure, such as real-time kinematic (RTK) networks, positioning them as foundational platforms for innovation in spatial intelligence.

Collectively, these contributions underscore a clear trajectory: geomatics is no longer a static or isolated discipline. It is rapidly evolving into a highly adaptive and interdisciplinary field, merging AI, remote sensing, GNSS, GIS, and 3D modelling to form a new generation of responsive and forward-looking geospatial systems. This special issue serves as a timely reflection of this transformation, bringing together perspectives from academia, government, and industry to help shape the future of geospatial intelligence.

On behalf of the special issue committee, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the International Journal of Geoinformatics for accepting and supporting this special issue. The journal provides an important platform for disseminating cutting-edge research and amplifying the global voice of the geospatial community.

We also gratefully acknowledge the support of the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM), the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM), the Land Surveyors Board Malaysia (LJT), the Association of Authorised Land Surveyors Malaysia (PEJUTA), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), and all other supporting partners. Their collaboration and commitment were instrumental in the successful realisation of this special issue.
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to my fellow guest editors, Assoc. Prof. Sr Dr Saiful Aman Hj Sulaiman, Sr Mohamad Hezri Razali, and Sr Dr Muhammad Abdul Hakim Muhamad, for their dedication and scholarly leadership. Their collective efforts ensured the quality, relevance, and diversity of the contributions presented.

Finally, my heartfelt thanks go to all authors for their rigorous and innovative research, and to the reviewers for their constructive and insightful evaluations. It is our hope that this special issue will inspire further interdisciplinary collaboration and stimulate new advances at the frontier of geomatics and artificial intelligence.
