Let’s talk about the dreaded PERFECT TENSES 🤓✨

I get asked about the perfect tenses ALL the time, and the most frequently asked question is this: “WHY?!” In other words, what’s the point? What do these grammatical structures actually do? What’s their purpose? Can’t I just use the simple past or simple present and be done with it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Guys, I hear you…

…and my answer is this: it simply sounds better 😅 sure, it’ll up your score on your IELTS if you can show off using the past perfect and present perfect continuous in your answers, but the truth is, in your everyday spoken English, using the perfect tenses will make you sound more confident and like you truly have a grasp on the English language 😉

“I can’t be bothered!” 👀🥱✨

^^ What does this actually mean? 🤔 When we say that we “can’t be bothered” to do something, it either means that
a) we don’t think it’s important or necessary to do that thing, OR
b) we are simply too tired and/or lazy to do that thing 🥱✨

This expression is SO common 😅 for example, I can NEVER be bothered to iron my clothes (I just think it’s totally unnecessary) and last night, I couldn’t be bothered to cook dinner - I was “knackered” (exhausted, really tired) 😴✨

To “buy” something doesn’t always mean to spend money on something… it can be used in ANOTHER WAY: to believe something to be true… 👀 listen up:

So, when we use the verb “to buy” (remember it’s an irregular verb: buy/bought) it is most frequently used when we “purchase” something; for example, I need to buy some milk, or last night I bought a new jacket online.

But we also use this verb when we talk about BELIEVING things to be true, specifically, ideas, points of views, theories, and explanations for things. If someone is telling you something and you’re asked, “do you buy this?” it’s like saying, “do you believe what they’re saying is TRUE?” 🤔✨

So by saying, “I totally buy this” or “I buy into this”, it’s like saying, “yep, I totally believe this is true, I agree with this theory, idea, or belief” - BUT if you don’t believe it to be true, genuine, or real, you can say, “I don’t buy it” (I don’t believe it) 🤷🏻‍♀️✨

It’s quite a tricky one to explain so listen to my examples in this 3- part mini lesson and see if you can use “buy” in this way in a sentence of your own ☺️👩🏻‍🏫❤️🍯✨

One of my best friends is from the USA, and she said that she learned this word from her British friends (probably me) as apparently, Americans don’t really use this word… so here’s some for you 😎❤️

- “Whinge” (verb, also a noun - to whinge and to have a whinge) is another word for “moan” or “complain”, but incessantly, like, over and over again, constantly, in an annoying way… (we all do it) 👀😅✨

To “WEIGH (something) UP” or to “WEIGH (someone) UP”… ⚖️ ✨

It’s phrasal verb time! …and I think we should bring back (inspired by the beautiful 😚)

SO: to “weigh something up” means to kind of assess a situation: it’s to look at the pros and the cons, and then make a decision that is best for you based on your assessment… the process of this is “weighing it up” - it’s like saying, on the one hand is x, and on the other hand is y… what’s the best choice here? 🤔✨

To “weigh SOMEONE up” is kind of similar: it’s to make a judgment of someone, especially their character - in other words, to see if they’re a good and honest person or… a questionable person, let’s say… 🤨✨

As a remote worker, or “digital nomad”, I have learned the importance over the years of “keeping my wits about me” 👀✨

…and this is a very common expression: to “keep your wits about you” means to stay alert and focused of your surroundings. It means to be vigilant and to make sure you are paying attention of where you are, and what / who might be around you to stay safe - I cant stress the importance of this enough!! 🫡✨

For example, if you’re walking home alone at night, it’s so important to “keep your wits about you” (stay alert, keep an eye out for what or who is nearby) in order to stay safe 🙏🏼✨

Similarly, if you’re in a new place, just “keep your wits about you” as you never know what might be around the corner… careful for that truck speeding around the corner! 😮🛻💨

Also, if you’re in a busy place, mind out for pick-pockets! I alway “keep my wits about me” on the Tube in London because crowded places can be equally dangerous! 😬✨

“Talking to her was like TRYING TO GET BLOOD FROM A STONE!” 🪨🩸🤯

…but what does this actually mean? 🤔 Let’s take a look at this idiom together 👩🏻‍🏫✨

When we are talking to someone, either just making general conversation or when we’re trying to get information from someone, and they’re a bit unresponsive or difficult to talk to, we can describe this scenario to be “like (trying to) get blood from a stone”, which is another way of basically saying, it’s IMPOSSIBLE! 😭✨

This is because no matter how hard you might TRY to squeeze blood from a stone (or water, or anything) it’s impossible: it won’t happen. So, sometimes, speaking to someone can feel like this: no matter how hard you try, you’re not gonna get much out of them 😅✨

To be “STUCK IN A RUT” 😩✨

Okay, my lovely students: let’s get real. This happens to us all! 🤷🏻‍♀️✨

To be “stuck in a rut” (idiom) means that you feel like you’re stuck in a situation in life and you can’t move forward. This could be a job, a relationship, or any kind of situation really (even if it’s just within your own head) and you simply can’t find the willpower or motivation to move forward 🫠✨

For example, last week, I was totally stuck in a rut! I couldn’t find any motivation to work on my projects or meet up with any of my friends, so I kinda just stayed in every day and watched way too much Netflix 👀 🙈

But when I feel stuck in a rut, I think it’s important to allow myself a few days to do absolutely nothing and give my brain a rest. It usually happens when I feel a bit overwhelmed with life… know what I mean? 🤷🏻‍♀️✨

Anyway, an actual “rut” is like a ditch - like a track mark left by wheels going over a road or a path over and over again, which cars, bikes, and other vehicles can get stuck in sometimes. They can’t move forward. This is where the expression comes from, I believe 👩🏻‍🏫✨

“Few and far between…” - let’s take a look at this very common expression ☺️👩🏻‍🏫✨

To say that something is “few and far between” is another way of saying it’s rare, scarce, or infrequent - in other words, it doesn’t happen very often or come along very often, either - as such, we usually use this expression when we talk about:

• chances
• opportunities
• rare occurrences
