Anyone Can Drown, No-one Should.
World Drowning Prevention Day, declared by the United Nations in April 2021, is held annually on July 25th. This global advocacy day serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and to encourage organizations and individuals to offer life-saving solutions to prevent drowning.
According to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) data published in 2020, drowning deaths in Thailand reached 3,956, accounting for 0.89% of total deaths. The age-adjusted death rate is 5.49 per 100,000 population, ranking Thailand #22 in the world. Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children below the age of 15 in Thailand.
In Phuket there have been recent cases of drowning of both locals and tourists and it is important that we take time to consider ways to prevent this tragic loss of life.
This year, the Phuket Hotels Association, in collaboration with the Australian Consul-General in Phuket, supported by Phuket Lifeguard Service decided to work together to highlight preventable drownings with a series of activities. These initiatives started with lifesaving training for hotel staff.
For World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25th, member hotels are also encouraged to do their own “DO ONE THING TO PREVENT DROWNING” activity and share it on social media, demonstrating their commitment to making hotels safer.
Activities include first aid training, CPR classes, swimming lessons, and more. This will be followed by a “Kid’s Water Safety Day” open to the public at Patong Beach on July 27th.
We urge everyone to think what you can do to make a difference:-
Learn to swim or teach someone to swim, supervise children carefully, avoid alcohol near water, be aware of your surroundings - take extra care when swimming on holiday or in an unfamiliar area. Let's all do one thing to stay safe.
