When should a child begin to learn arithmetic? In this form the question is not very sensible. Children begin to count through watching and copying others do it, sometimes at the age of two or three, sometimes a year or two later. They couldn't do this if at the same time something within them (the genius in his heart and lungs) didn't stimulate them to meet what their senses offer them.
Older brothers and sisters (often very good teachers, that’s why I do love class with mix age students) may get them to copy what they are doing. Provided lots of other activities interest the child, it would be foolish to attempt to stop them becoming interested in counting, different kind of numbers, and sharing things out numerically. It is only when arithmetic is imposed upon them that subtle dangers to health can arise.

We have loved making mandala and enjoyed being co-creators in such special pieces of art. Mandala is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “circle.” Many people use mandalas in a spiritual practice, while others simply appreciate their artistic and symmetrical beauty. Making mandalas is calming and relaxing and it’s great for nurturing your child’s creativity and problem solving skills. We started using a rectangle as a sample tool and made it rotating. Making a polygon rotating doesn’t change his shape and if you follow a pattern this rotation becomes a beautiful artistic creation. Then soon the kids wanted to create their own mandalas using triangles or making their own sample tool 💚

Makha Bucha Day is one of the most important Buddhist festival in Thailand. It tells us about an extraordinary meeting between Buddha and 1,250 monks. It is is considered a miraculous event in Buddhist history as each of the monks present was ordained directly by the Buddha himself and had attained enlightenment. The Buddha used this opportunity to deliver the Ovada Patimokkha, a fundamental teaching that outlines the core ethical precepts of Buddhism. This speech emphasized the importance of self-discipline, mindfulness, and non-violence, principles that continue to shape Buddhist practice today. Inspired by this extraordinary event, our children have been guided on their wet on wet painting to represent the light of Buddha peaceful and open minded philosophy. Monks are represented by flowers around Buddha light ❤️

There is a deep human need to understand, explain and predict the natural world.
Math is the system that allows us to do that. At The Oak, math is characterized by an individual experience of the truth of numbers, and an exploration of mathematical concepts that will yield confident and competent problem solvers.
Our education lays the foundation for each individual to experience the internalization of mathematical thinking. Math lessons are brought through many subjects and modalities, while mindfully educating and experiencing math through the hands, heart and head. Our children started folding paper sheets and then making good considerations about what they had found out. Words as angle, side, parallel, vertix, square, triangles, etc., just popped up with joyful surprise ❤️

As Picasso so eloquently put it: “every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist as we grow up”. I love that.

Seeing my young students drawing the diagram of snake so carefully and with many datails, I could feel their scientist attitude. When teachers work with patient, dedication and love we are going to have a great possibilty to keep their attitude, curiosity and urge of learning alive ❤️

My name is Debora, I am a child psychologist Dr graduated at the University of Italy in 2000. I got my postgraduate qualification in December 2010 and I keep studying and learning. That’s why there is something in Rudolf Steiner’s words that make me feel like ‘you are doing well.’

Our brain learn better through images, and images come first to the children through storytelling. The children listen as their teacher brings a lesson through story, taking it into their imaginations, creating for themselves a picture with detail and feeling, taken from what they've heard. Visual examples are so important for the students so they are able re-create for themselves in their own notebooks, allowing them to personalize their work with specific details of the story that spoke to them. It is through these lessons, which come in the form of stories woven from history, mythology, art, science, geography, and maths, that the students begin to make strong and meaningful connections to the world in which they live.

Where do numbers come from? Why did humans invent these beautiful symbols long ago? What were they looking for?

My young students have been amazed when I told them that humans had created numbers earlier than written words as there was a kind of urgence, indeed our ancestors need to count. So I asked them to write down ‘10’ without using the numbers we know - super easy!! But what will you do with number 12,542?

The Oak uses Socrates' maieutics which aspires to give birth to the truth in the youth. Socratic maieutics (or Socratic questioning) is an educational method named after Socrates that focuses on discovering answers by asking students questions.
