“is, am , are”

bpen เป็น use for
1. occupation 2. nationality *** kon + country’s name
3. sickness
4. relationship
5. describing a person’s character *** kon + character

Basic Sentence Structure: subject + bpen + noun

Examples:
- chăn bpen kon Angkrit (I am English.)
- kaŏ bpen mŏr (He is a doctor.)
- Kaŏ bpen mâe kŏng-chăn (She is my mother.)
- Bubu bpen măa kŏng rao (Bubu is our dog.)
- Jane bpen nâwng-săo kŏng-Tom (Jane is Tom’s younger sister)
- Peter bpen kon jai dee maâk. (Peter is very kind.)

yù อยู่ - location
Examples:
- Where are you? = Khun yù teê-năi?
- I am in Bangkok. = Chan yù teê grung-thêp

keu คือ use for
1. name
2. describe something / use to explain something

Examples:
- What is it? = An-neé keu arai?
- This is sesame oil. = An-neé keu Naám man ngaa.

Têe ที่ = at, place, space

1. “Têe”ที่ has many usages depending on its position. Earlier we have used it as a preposition meaning “at” , “in” or “to”

Ex. Kaŏ yù têe baân. เขาอยู่ที่บ้าน He is at home.

Kaŏ yù têe Muang Thai. เขาอยู่ที่เมืองไทย He is in Thailand.

Rao taan a-haăn raán-a-haăn Sâp-ee-săn. เราทานอาหารที่ร้านอาหารแซ่บอีสาน We eat at Sâp-ee-săn restaurant.

2. “Têe”ที่ is also an initial element meaning “thing where, place where” , in certain noun derivatives.

Ex. Têe-kìa-bu-rèe ที่เขี่ยบุหรี่ ashtray (a place where cigarette ash goes)
Têe-nâng ที่นั่ง seat ( a place to sit )

3. “Têe”ที่ is used as a classifier of numbers of dishes, cups, seats.

Ex. Kâo sŏng têe ข้าวสองที่ two dishes of rice

Têe-nâng saăm têe ที่นั่งสามที่ three seats

4. “Têe”ที่ is used as a short form of “têe din” or “têe” ที่ดิน หรือ ที่ (land)

Ex. Kăo séu têe-din เขาซื้อที่ดิน He bought land.

Kăo séu têe têe Chiang Mài. เขาซื้อที่ที่เชียงใหม่ He bought land in Chiang Mai.

5. “Têe”ที่ is used as a pronoun meaning ‘that, who, which’
Ex. Kon têe ma คนที่มา the person who came

Kon têe ma chêu Somchai คนที่มาชื่อคุณสมชัย The person who came was Mr. Somchai.

Năng-sĕu têe phŏm chôb. หนังสือที่ผมชอบ the book that I like

Năng-sĕu têe phŏm chôb yù bon thó หนังสือที่ผมชอบอยู่บนโต๊ะ The book that I like is on the table.

6. Also it has many other meanings.

I’d like a ticket for a second-class air-conditioned car with a lower berth.
Phŏm / Dechăn kăw dtŭa nawn air chán sŏng dtiang lâng (Kráp/ká).

How to talk about problems in Thai.
Problem- Bpan-haă ปัญหา

Broken, out of order, spoiled – Sĭa เสีย
The computer is broken. Computêr sĭa. คอมพิวเตอร์ เสีย

Fragile – dtak แตก
A glass mirror is fragile. Gra-jog dtak. กระจก แตก

Leak – Rûa รั่ว
The pipe has leak. Thòr-naám rûa. ท่อน้ำ รั่ว

Burned – Maâi ไหม้
The food is burning. – Ahaăn Maâi อาหารไหม้

No signal – Mâi mee Sănyan ไม่มีสัญญาณ
The internet has no signal. In-dter-net Mâi mee Sănyan อินเตอร์ ไม่มีสัญญาณ

Split – Kaat ขาด
The wire is broken. Saăi-fai Kaat สายไฟ ขาด

Stuck, Sticks – dtit ติด
Overheated – Ráwn gern bpai ร้อนเกินไป
Cracked – Ráo ร้าว
Disconnect(ed) – Lòot àwk หลุดออก
Dry – Hâeng แห้ง
Loose – lŭam หลวม
Vibrating, shaking – sàn สั่น

Now, we will make a sentence.

It is............... – Man................ (insert word) มัน
For example: It is stuck. – Man dtit. มันติด

Or if you know the name of the thing, put that in front. For example:

The radiator is dry. Mâw nám hâeng หม้อน้ำ แห้ง

The car won’t start. Rót sà-dtat mâi dtit. รถ สตาร์ท ไม่ติด

The engine is overheated. Krêung yon ráwn gern bpai เครื่องยนต์ ร้อนเกินไป

Some others useful things about cars and mortorbikes.

Please check the oil. Dtruat nám-man-krêung dûay Kráp/kâ ตรวจ น้ำมันเครื่อง ด้วยครับ/ค่ะ

Please change the oil. Pliàn nám-man-krêung dûay Kráp/kâ เปลี่ยน น้ำมันเครื่อง ด้วยครับ/ค่ะ

Check the tires, battery, and spark plugs. Dtruat yang, bat-dter-rêe, hŭa tian dûay Kráp/kâ ตรวจ ยาง, แบตเตอรี่, หัวเทียน ด้วยครับ/ค่ะ

The tire has a puncture. Yang-rót rûa. ยางรถ รั่ว

When driving in Thailand, it is good to know basic Thai phrases and vocabulary in case the police stop you or you have an accident. If in doubt, you can print this and keep with you :)

What to say when stopped by the police at a checkpoint:
"Here is my driver's license"
Anneé bpen bai kap-kèe kong Phŏm / Dechăn.

"Here is my passport"
An-neé bpen Pás-pawt kong phŏm/ Dechăn.

If you do not have your passport, you can say:
"Here is copy of my passport"
An-neé bpen sŭm-nao Pás-pawt kŏng phŏm/ Dechăn.

"My passport is in my hotel. Do you want me to call my friend to bring it here?"
Pás-pawt kŏng phŏm/ Dechăn yù-teé Rong-raam. Khun dtóng-gaan haí phûan kong phŏm/ Dechăn ao ma haí teé neé măi ?

What to say when stopped by the police not at a checkpoint:

"Why did you stop me?"
Khun haí jod pûa A-rai ?

"I was not driving fast; I was driving 40 km/h"
Phŏm / Dechăn maí daí kap reo. Phŏm kap 40 kilo dtòr Chûa Mong.

To be legally allowed to drive in Thailand, a foreigner must have either a Thai driver's license or an International Driver's Permit (which is a document that looks like a passport). You must also have a valid tax sticker visible location on your vehicle. If you are driving a motorbike or a scooter, you must have a helmet on, if driving a car, you must be wearing the seatbelt. If all these three conditions are met, the police should not ask money from you. If they do, you can pay or you can try to discuss it:

Please give me a ticket and I will go to the police station to pay it" Phŏm/ Dechăn já bpai jài tee sá-tă-nee dtam ruat. Kŏr bin dúay Krap/ka.

"What is your name?"
Khun dtam ruat chú A-rai? (Krap/Ka)

"Please show me your police ID card"
K Phŏm/ Dechăn kŏr do baat dtam ruat nòi Krap/Ka.

"Can I take your photo?"
Phŏm/ Dechăn tày-rub kŏng khun dái măi. (krap/ka)

"Can I talk to the officer who is in charge here?"
Phŏm/ Dechăn kŏr kui gab jaó-ná-teé teé do lae teé neé(krap/ka)

If you have had an accident, these are good things to know how to say:

"I had green light, he had red light and he crashed into me"
Kăo mái yût fai dang. Kaŏw ma chon phŏm/ Dechăn.

"I was driving carefully; he made an illegal turn and crashed into me"
Phŏm/ Dechăn kap rod yang rá-wang. Kăo kap rod ma chon phŏm/ Dechăn.

"I was driving carefully, he was driving wrong way and crashed into me"
Phŏm/ Dechăn kap rod yang rá-wang. Kăo kap rod ma pìd taang laé ma chon phŏm/ Dechăn.

"He is drunk"
Kăo maow laeo kap rod.

"He caused the accident, I didn't do anything wrong"
Kăo tam hái me U-bat-ti-hêt. Phŏm / Dechăn mái dái taam a-rai pid.

"I will not pay for the damage; the accident was not my fault" Phŏm/ Dechăn já mái jày kâ-sĭa-hăy. Praó-waá phŏm/ Dechăn mái dái tam pid.

"I have a dash camera in my vehicle. I have recording of the entire accident. We can go to police station and see from the video that I did not cause this accident."
Phŏm mee gróng tài rub nai rod. Phŏm dái tày túng môd mùa gerd U-bat-ti-hêt. Rao jà bpai teé sá-taă-nee-dtum-ruat laé do video. Já dái hĕn waá phŏm/ Dechăn mái dái bpen kon pid.

Or, if it was you who caused the accident:
"The accident was my fault, I am very sorry"
Phŏm / Dechăn kŏr- tód. Phŏm/ Dechăn phen kon pid ang.

"I will pay for the damage"
Phŏm/ Dechăn já jày kâ-sĭa-hăy.

"I am sorry but do not understand Thai, please call the Tourist Police here to translate"
Phŏm / Dechăn kŏr- tód. Phŏm/ Dechăn mái kaó jai pa-să-thai. Chuáy Toe-rá-sàp hă dtum-ruat tong-teao hái maa teé-neé phûa pbair pa-să.

"I want to call my lawyer"
Phŏm/ Dechăn dtóng-gaan Toe-rá-sàp hă tá-nai-kuam.

"This is the number of my lawyer, if you want any money or have any claims against me, please call contact my lawyer"
Bur-neé bpen bur kŏng tá-nai-kuam phŏm / Dechăn. Taá khun dtóng-gaan ngern rŭe riâk kâ-sĭa-hăy, hái khun dtid-dtòr tá-nai-kuam kŏng phŏm / Dechăn.

If you are injured and need help:
"Help me!" Chûay dúay

"Please call an ambulance!"
Chûay Toe-rá-sàp riâk rod-pá-ya-baan.

If you do not have an insurance, private hospitals can be very expensive. If you need urgent treatment, you can say to the ambulance drivers:

"Please take me to government hospital" Chûay sòng phŏm/Dechăn teé rong-pá-ya-baan kŏng rat-tá-baan.

Or, if you know the name of a hospital where you want to go:
"Please take me to Lanna hospital"
Chûay sòng phŏm/Dechăn teé rong-pá-ya-baan Lanna.

You should also let your friends know:
"I live in hotel Le Meridien, please call them and let them know I have been to accident"
Phŏm/Dechăn pak teé rong-raem Le Meridien. Chûay Toe-rá-sàp bpai rong-raem. Bok-wâa phŏm/Dechăn me U-bat-ti-hêt.

"This is phone number of my friend, please call him and let him know I have been to accident"
Bur-neé bhen bur kŏng phúan phom. Chûay Toe-rá-sàp Bok-wâa phŏm/Dechăn me U-bat-ti-hêt.

Khru Nui is the most amazing teacher - she can literally teach an OLD dog to sit and then he will start to bark in Thai after not to long....
She never gives up snd always takes time out to explain the thai culture when needed.
So her lessons are not strictly working on words, but also the wrong and right behaviors around your new thai friends.

Telling time

“Dton” is a preposition for time. Telling part/section of time

Dton cháo = In the morning ตอนเช้า
Dton Bài = In the afternoon ตอนบ่าย
Dton Yen = In the evening ตอนเย็น
Dton Klang Khun = At Night/ during the night ตอนกลางคืน
Dton Klang Wan = In the day time/ during the day ตอนกลางวัน
Dton nií = Now! ตอนนี้
Dton nân = At that time, (in/during) those days ตอนนั้น
Asking question
Dton Năi = When? / What part of time? ตอนไหน
Khun jà bpai Tàlad Dton Năi = When are you going to the market? คุณจะไปตลาดตอนไหน

Or
Kì Mong กี่โมง What time? (Mong = O’clock)

Afternoon start with “Bài” + number + Mong
From 1 pm. – 4 pm.

Bài Nûng Mong = 1 pm.
Bài Sŏng Mong = 2 pm.
Bài Sŏng Mong Krùng = 2:30 pm.

Evening – Yen
Hâa Mong Yen = 5 pm.
Hok Mong Yen = 6 pm.
But if the time start from 7 pm. – 11.59 pm.
Nùng Tùm = 7 pm.
Sŏng Tùm = 8 pm.
Saăm Tùm = 9 pm.

Morning – cháo
Jet Mong cháo = 7 am.
Bpàt Mong cháo = 8 am.

Phrase of a day.
Rûang jíb jíb = The issue or problem that is quite easy for you to handle.
