When driving in Thailand, it is good to know basic Thai phrases and vocabulary in case the police stop you or you have an accident. If in doubt, you can print this and keep with you :)
What to say when stopped by the police at a checkpoint:
"Here is my driver's license"
Anneé bpen bai kap-kèe kong Phŏm / Dechăn.
"Here is my passport"
An-neé bpen Pás-pawt kong phŏm/ Dechăn.
If you do not have your passport, you can say:
"Here is copy of my passport"
An-neé bpen sŭm-nao Pás-pawt kŏng phŏm/ Dechăn.
"My passport is in my hotel. Do you want me to call my friend to bring it here?"
Pás-pawt kŏng phŏm/ Dechăn yù-teé Rong-raam. Khun dtóng-gaan haí phûan kong phŏm/ Dechăn ao ma haí teé neé măi ?
What to say when stopped by the police not at a checkpoint:
"Why did you stop me?"
Khun haí jod pûa A-rai ?
"I was not driving fast; I was driving 40 km/h"
Phŏm / Dechăn maí daí kap reo. Phŏm kap 40 kilo dtòr Chûa Mong.
To be legally allowed to drive in Thailand, a foreigner must have either a Thai driver's license or an International Driver's Permit (which is a document that looks like a passport). You must also have a valid tax sticker visible location on your vehicle. If you are driving a motorbike or a scooter, you must have a helmet on, if driving a car, you must be wearing the seatbelt. If all these three conditions are met, the police should not ask money from you. If they do, you can pay or you can try to discuss it:
Please give me a ticket and I will go to the police station to pay it" Phŏm/ Dechăn já bpai jài tee sá-tă-nee dtam ruat. Kŏr bin dúay Krap/ka.
"What is your name?"
Khun dtam ruat chú A-rai? (Krap/Ka)
"Please show me your police ID card"
K Phŏm/ Dechăn kŏr do baat dtam ruat nòi Krap/Ka.
"Can I take your photo?"
Phŏm/ Dechăn tày-rub kŏng khun dái măi. (krap/ka)
"Can I talk to the officer who is in charge here?"
Phŏm/ Dechăn kŏr kui gab jaó-ná-teé teé do lae teé neé(krap/ka)
If you have had an accident, these are good things to know how to say:
"I had green light, he had red light and he crashed into me"
Kăo mái yût fai dang. Kaŏw ma chon phŏm/ Dechăn.
"I was driving carefully; he made an illegal turn and crashed into me"
Phŏm/ Dechăn kap rod yang rá-wang. Kăo kap rod ma chon phŏm/ Dechăn.
"I was driving carefully, he was driving wrong way and crashed into me"
Phŏm/ Dechăn kap rod yang rá-wang. Kăo kap rod ma pìd taang laé ma chon phŏm/ Dechăn.
"He is drunk"
Kăo maow laeo kap rod.
"He caused the accident, I didn't do anything wrong"
Kăo tam hái me U-bat-ti-hêt. Phŏm / Dechăn mái dái taam a-rai pid.
"I will not pay for the damage; the accident was not my fault" Phŏm/ Dechăn já mái jày kâ-sĭa-hăy. Praó-waá phŏm/ Dechăn mái dái tam pid.
"I have a dash camera in my vehicle. I have recording of the entire accident. We can go to police station and see from the video that I did not cause this accident."
Phŏm mee gróng tài rub nai rod. Phŏm dái tày túng môd mùa gerd U-bat-ti-hêt. Rao jà bpai teé sá-taă-nee-dtum-ruat laé do video. Já dái hĕn waá phŏm/ Dechăn mái dái bpen kon pid.
Or, if it was you who caused the accident:
"The accident was my fault, I am very sorry"
Phŏm / Dechăn kŏr- tód. Phŏm/ Dechăn phen kon pid ang.
"I will pay for the damage"
Phŏm/ Dechăn já jày kâ-sĭa-hăy.
"I am sorry but do not understand Thai, please call the Tourist Police here to translate"
Phŏm / Dechăn kŏr- tód. Phŏm/ Dechăn mái kaó jai pa-să-thai. Chuáy Toe-rá-sàp hă dtum-ruat tong-teao hái maa teé-neé phûa pbair pa-să.
"I want to call my lawyer"
Phŏm/ Dechăn dtóng-gaan Toe-rá-sàp hă tá-nai-kuam.
"This is the number of my lawyer, if you want any money or have any claims against me, please call contact my lawyer"
Bur-neé bpen bur kŏng tá-nai-kuam phŏm / Dechăn. Taá khun dtóng-gaan ngern rŭe riâk kâ-sĭa-hăy, hái khun dtid-dtòr tá-nai-kuam kŏng phŏm / Dechăn.
If you are injured and need help:
"Help me!" Chûay dúay
"Please call an ambulance!"
Chûay Toe-rá-sàp riâk rod-pá-ya-baan.
If you do not have an insurance, private hospitals can be very expensive. If you need urgent treatment, you can say to the ambulance drivers:
"Please take me to government hospital" Chûay sòng phŏm/Dechăn teé rong-pá-ya-baan kŏng rat-tá-baan.
Or, if you know the name of a hospital where you want to go:
"Please take me to Lanna hospital"
Chûay sòng phŏm/Dechăn teé rong-pá-ya-baan Lanna.
You should also let your friends know:
"I live in hotel Le Meridien, please call them and let them know I have been to accident"
Phŏm/Dechăn pak teé rong-raem Le Meridien. Chûay Toe-rá-sàp bpai rong-raem. Bok-wâa phŏm/Dechăn me U-bat-ti-hêt.
"This is phone number of my friend, please call him and let him know I have been to accident"
Bur-neé bhen bur kŏng phúan phom. Chûay Toe-rá-sàp Bok-wâa phŏm/Dechăn me U-bat-ti-hêt.
